My name is Carol and I was born in Bogota, Colombia. My parents decided to move to the United States when I was five years old. New York has made me into a multicultural individual who appreciates diversity and understands the struggles that many people have to go through from all over the world in order to achieve their "American Dream". My parents' dream, just like many others, was to bring me here so that I would be a successful woman with knowledge and education. They wanted me to obtain the things that they weren't able to give me in Colombia. I have so many goals and aspirations for myself but the simple fact that I wasn't born in this country is dividing me from my dreams. At times I ask myself, what is the point of my hard work and dedication, if no matter how hard I try I'm not going to be able to get anywhere. There are times where I cry and I blame my parents but then I realize that they suffer as much as I do. Being an American isn't about your ethnic background, it is about the passion and veneration that one has for its nation. Colombia is the country that saw me take my first steps but it is in the United States where I have cried, loved, and learned the hardships and struggles of life. We ALL deserve an opportunity to succeed in life.
