Being undocumented sucks right now. Not that is ever great, but the climate of uncertainty makes it worse.

However, I was thinking about the one time that being undocumented had a little perk. It made me laugh, and think about what other anecdotes people may have where they were glad (at least a little bit) that they were undocumented.

Here is my anecdote:

About a year ago I received a notice that I had been selected for jury duty. At first I was like damn, that sucks! But then I read up on it and apparently you can't do jury duty unless you're a citizen. The letter I got was real, but it was obviously a mistake!

Anyway, I sent an e-mail to the government (I forget what agency was in charge of this in the state I was living in, but that's beside the point) telling them this was a mistake because I was a DACA recipient. They noted the mistake and cleared me from jury duty. However, I had already sent a copy of the notice to appear for jury duty to my employer and I got the paid day off anywat (I may or may not have been sneaky and NOT informed my employer that I was cleared from jury duty)

Any other anecdotes where being undocumented paid off? I'm sure there are at least a few more!

It's possible that once you become a permanent resident or greater, that you will be able to keep this permanent bar from jury duty. I don't think they ever check that you have upgraded.

Dang illegals get all the perks.

Dont forget the perk that means you aren't draftable cause you can run away to another nation.

Don't forget the perk that you can run away at any time to another nation.

Tax perks, the united states cant tax you on worldwide income.

Perk of having to work harder for things which makes you more hungry for victory, and makes victories sweeter.

Even as citizens we can skip jury duty by telling the courts we are ESL. Personally, I think in my native language 65% of the time so I qualify as ESL. What a beautiful problem to have...

If you say you are majoring in women studies, you are sure to be left off the hook.

Perk: Didnt have to pay the penalty for not having health insurance. In fact, there are times I have thought about rescinding my employer's insurance and just have them give me the cash.

Perk: The ability to try new things without the fear to fail because if I failed I could always blame it on not having documents.

Perk: Super human patience, courage and will to succeed because if we dont make it here we wont make it back where we came from.

Perk of automatically being seen as a foreigner, despite the fact that a Mexican majority is dawning upon the United States and already has hit noon in several areas.

Just tell them you want them to get the death penalty. I wonder what they would say?
