Hi Guys,

Got a job offer! It is 50% more salary so difficult to walk away from. Would you switch jobs given the unknown with DACA?

I have been with my current company for almost 5 years and viewed by leadership as a top performer but the compensation is just not industry standard.

Any insight might be helpful!

Personally, I think stability is sometimes a bigger factor than money. I could be making more somewhere else at the expense of losing my laid-back perks and toxicity-free telecommute advantage.

Very unlikely to be worth it for me. But in your case, without entirely knowing your situation, I say give it a try if it isn't a start-up.

do your math and see what other benefits/ career progression you have with new job vs old. I was viewed by leadership as a top performer as well. im with with my company for 7 years and last year I applied for better job and they contacted my manager and all of sudden there was a Chao between leadership. they reached me and asked me why I decided to leave and what are my concerns. I told them that I have no problems and concerns just financial issues. they gave my 15+K as well nice career progression as well. so try to contact your leadership that you might be leaving due to financial issues and see if they can offer you more and keep in touch with other job offer as well. good luck

It is top 10 global consulting firm.

I LOVE my current job but it would take me 4+ years to make the kind of $$ the new company is offering. My employer is trying to see if they can come close to the $$ but even my boss (whom my trust) said the new offer is extremely generous and it is unlikely that they would be able to match it.

Thank you for that insightful response!

Yes, I let my boss (who is pretty high up) know this morning. He asked for a chance to see if they can come back with a better number - which I know they will because I am single handedly managing $1.5 mil project with a team of 10+ people.

Having said that, I doubt it will be close to the offer the new employer is making. It is 50% more. It will take me 4+ years to make that in this place.

Imo, I don't see how the unknown in DACA would affect switching jobs if that's the only factor. DACA's status affects all jobs, inlcuding your existing one, so on the surface, if you get to make 150% of your current income, why not go for it?

Wow they contacted your current manager? Did you check the box that tells them to not contact most recent company? I know a lot of people do that for obvious reasons.

I would switch jobs for the pay raise (I've done it myself) it's harder to grow unless you take chances and in this case you are being compensated for the switch. Yes there are a lot of unknowns but you are being compensated for that.

How would things going south with DACA affect you differently in your current job versus this new opportunity? If at some point, you are unable to renew, you will not be able to work after you expire regardless of the job you have.

Or am I missing something else?

Thanks for all the responses friends!

I was just thinking that the new employer may start asking questions since my current DACA EAD expires within 5 months.

Update on the situation: the current employer counter offered. 20% raise with guaranteed promotion in December with direct mentoring opportunity with the EVP (she sits on the executive board of my company).

The new offer is 50% more pay and I would travel domestically a lot - which I enjoy!

I am officially confused!!

"guaranteed promotion" -> unless it's written on paper.... sure thing.
"direct mentoring opportunity" -> you will work for this company for a long time.

bull shit. I jump ship and get $$$$. You don't own the company. There is no loyalty needed. Career progression == jumping ship around.
