My learner permit temp visitor status expired in 2017 but the license itself is still not expired. Do I have to update it with DMV or I can take road test without updating it?

Some States has a visitor status expiration date which is different from your drivers license expiration date. If that is the case it is advisable to update the license, to avoid any red flags or questions about your status.

Yes if you get a REAL ID one. If you just get a non-REAL ID it'll be valid for full term. So I kinda just recommend getting a non-REAL ID and using your EAD if you need to fly domestically.

Called DMV. Basically they said I can take a road test with this permit and shouldn't have any problems. Once I pass the road test and get my driving license than I should update the temporary visitor status with them.

Not sure where OP lives. In my case my state only issues REAL IDs. So, I do have to get a new card every couple years.

Only state I know of that does the "Temporary visitor" text on them is New York and recently they started issuing non-Real ID licenses.

NJ also has the "Limited Term' on it now. Previously I think it said 'temporary visitor' or something like that.

I head NJ is allowing undocumented immigrants to get ids and DLs, is that the new change you are referring to?
