Gregg is the second of Obama's nominees as Commerce Secretary to withdraw. New Mexico Gov. Bill Richardson (N.M.) stepped aside earlier this year after allegations of a pay to play scandal involving him came to light.

Oh no, Gregg is so much harder to convince than Newman on the Dream Act.

We should still try to convince Gregg, but there are other Senators we can convince.

Gregg will leave Senate in 2010


The Union Leader reports that Gregg told New Hampshire reporters in a conference call that he won't seek another term.
Claire McCaskill, meanwhile, Twitters a shot at his "unproductive partisan habits."
UPDATE: In his press conference, Gregg says he will "probably not" run again.

The GOP must have been pressuring Gregg to stay because they knew Newman would have been more likely to vote with the Democrats. They want to concentrate their dwindling numbers for obstruction. The Republicans have failed at all obstruction attempts so far, but this shows they want every possible vote for filibusters.

Gregg withdrew because of "policy differences," at least officially. I think Obama took his "team of rivals" idea a bit too far in Gregg, though I would have relished having a pro-DREAM Senator in his place.
