^It's a good movie, and I'm with you; I doubt it'll open any minds...

Great movie, I love Bill Maher.

But I wouldn't count on it opening any minds - if Dawkins and Hitchens don't make people see things differently, I doubt Religulous will. Unfortunately.

I wouldn't let any media sway you. That goes for pro or anti-religion media. Religious films or secular films both are biased and have to convey a certain point of view to their viewers. Don't get sucked into it and become pawns. Great editing can convince people to believe in "evidence" that is actually not evidence at all. You're better off reading about religion or talking to real people than watching Bill Maher's movie or any movie that supports religion.

^Don't assume that people are gullible enough to have a total change of heart from just watching a movie. What movies like these do is plant a little seed that makes people question why their religion is the "one true religion" when there are so many out there and allows them to be more receptive to other points of view.

These types of movies also show the lengths people will go to to defend beliefs based entirely on nonsense with basis neither on religious sources nor historical facts.

I was really surprised that it didn't get nominated for an Oscar, but at least he got to plug the documentary at the actual ceremony.
By the way, his show's back on HBO.

I don't know of any book, film, or person who's ever come up with "evidence" about religion. I think they call it "faith", I call it insanity. Then again, maybe I just haven't come across books that prove how you can carve a woman out of a man's rib, or that snakes can actually talk, or that some old guy can turn wine into blood on sundays.

And that's just one religion...

  5. No links to or quotes from anti-immigrant sites.
Just FYI, and this is an open note to the mods reading this as well, any thread that is meant to incite a religious discussion or debate or WHATEVER will be locked or deleted. How many effin' religion threads do we need for people to realize that NO ONE GIVES A CRAP WHAT YOU MAY OR MAY NOT BELIEVE. If you believe in some kind of supernatural deity, good for you. If you don't, good for you. We've had countless threads on this.

And by the way, this thread would NOT have been locked if the bolded text from the OP was not added.

Ahem. And....locked.
