So one of the papers I have to turn into the Nursing Dept. is proof that I have malpractice insurance. However, its asking for a SSN. ugh..don't have one ...and it won't accept anything else. I have to get it from Nurses Services Organization.

I don't know what to do now.

What did you guys in California who are taking or have taken Nursing do about malpractice insurance? Did you need it or where you able to get around it?

Help

The nursing school I know never asked for malpractice insurance. As a student you are supposed to be covered by the school.

However, the school WILL ask for an SSN due to liability purposes and for the mandatory background check. The background check is done by an outside company and it is done by you giving your name and SSN. There's no way around it. Without passing a background check the Nursing Dpt will not accept you. Nursing programs are strict. They will DROP you anytime should their requirements aren't met. The need for SSN I think is due to the nature of the clinicals. In clinicals, you will be doing direct patient care in real hospitals. As a result, hospitals demand a lot of paperwork such as vaccinations and SSN # for "liability" purposes. Remember while you are in clinical, you have direct resposibility for your patient and have access to confidential patient information.

Well...for the background check, I don't need an SSN. They told me they could use my current address (have to be living there for at least 7 years) and that would be ok. I already sent that in and it should be arriving soon. Its the malpractice insurance I'm having trouble with.

I'm thinking of turning everything else except that paper, but I don't know yet.

Are you applying for the Nursing program or did you actually get accepted into the program and will start this fall. The usual wait to get in is 2 years.

I still don't get why the school is asking you to have malpractice insur.

I was accepted and hopefully starting in the fall. I have most of the paper work done. When I went to the malpractice website, I was a bit surprised that I couldn't get it done. I got the background check done.

I also can't ask the director or anyone there because schools out for now and there is no one to ask until summer session starts. Its really nerve wrecking.

Good luck, Nursing school is tough. Lots of reading and reading. You won't have a social life but will have friends for life.

Offer them your ITIN instead! Tell them your SS is in process.

THEY ARE NOT ICE. Don't let them freak you out over this.

btw, i'm in new york so i don't know if that makes any difference but the company was the same (NSO)

What school is this?
I see your problem.... I don't know if you can just plug in an ITIN in the SSN field
I don't know about everyone else but in my program they drop people without malpractice insurance...
Have u tried contacting NSO?

another reason why DREAM must become law. you guys are able to go to school and even paying instate. and even you were to go for free, you still have issues. people have not been able to become teachers because they have to do an internship at a school and to do that they must have a background check. is possible that some people can't become nurses at some places because of issues such as this insurance. others can't study abroad or do a bunch of other things such as buying a beer because they don't have a valid id.
