can you file a w-4 with a tax ID number (ITIN)? Or you need a valid SSN?

just use whatever number you put on the application. when the time comes to file your taxes just bring your ITIN to your tax preparer and they should know what to do.

But what happens if I use ITIN instead of SSN? Would I get in trouble?

What if the ITIN doesn't match the SSN you're using to work? (I'm not in this situation, just wondering)
