Hey guys, I heard that prop 8 (gay marriage ban) was overturned on a federal level, an that everyone that didn't get a chance to get married before is now getting married in California. My question is if I were to marry my partner of 3 years would I be able to get my citizenship this way? Does anyone else have any more info on this? Thanks

I don't know

A couple of months ago I heard something about DOMA (Defense of Marriage Act) being repeal or something like that. I don't know much about it but I would say it would be harder on a gay person.

Ask Angelo he is the expertise on gay

The short answer is no.
Quote:
Same-sex marriage, also referred to as gay marriage, is marriage between two persons of the same sex. The federal government of the United States does not recognize the marriages of same-sex couples and is prohibited from doing so by the Defense of Marriage Act.

Bill Clinton signed it into law.

No. gay marriage still doesn't count immigration wise. Sorry. Hopefully it will soon.

Federal government does not recognize gay marriage thanks to DOMA(Defense of Marriage Act). Gay-marriage couples are singles on their federal income tax return.

You two lovebirds in California are not legally married in the eyes of federal government, and are not eligible for immigration benefits.

That sucks.. what's the point of being married by the state if you can't even get the benefits of straight couples.

Oh, someone posted something about immigration and gay marriage a few weeks back on the News forum, I believe.. if you wanna go read about it.

You still get state benefits like joint state income tax return, inheritance, making the medical decision for partner, etc.

Because the state will at least recognize your marriage even if the feddies won't.
