Dozens of undocumented students rallied for the passage of the Dream Act at Miami Dade College's Wolfson Campus Monday morning. They hope their cries will reach Washington, D.C. where senior Democrats are trying to push the Dream Act into the defense bill, which is up for a vote this week.

"My legs are shaking," said Vanessa Jaramillo, an undocumented student waiting for legalization through the Dream Act.

Jaramillo's parents brought her to the U.S. when she was just 4-years-old. Today, she is enrolled at Miami Dade College, but can only afford to study at a snail's pace compared to her peers.

"I'm taking one class per semester because it's really expensive," she said. "I pay a thousand dollars and my mom is a single parent and not every semester we have a thousand dollars to take out to pay my classes."

She said it's an issue that depresses her often as she yearns to be what she calls normal.

"I don't feel normal. When they say immigrants are aliens -- that's how they make you feel for real," she said. "Every single time I go and I try to open a door, they close it. You don't have social, you don't have papers, you can't come in."

U.S. Senate candidate Kendrick Meek spoke at Monday's rally on campus. He said he's personally delivered letters to other legislators advocating for the Dream Act.

"Now more than ever, we need to make sure that every person here in Florida and in this country is productive," Meek said. "We have valedictorians of high school graduations that are ineligible for in-state tuition fees."

Meek believes the legislation is a logical addition to the defense bill. Under the Dream Act, young undocumented immigrants who want to become legalized can do so by serving two years in the military.

Meek said it's a way that immigrants can help bolster the country's military.

"Right now if someone goes to war and they're a resident it helps them with their citizenship. So this is going to move America forward," Meek said.
