This depresses me because I remembered that at one point all the University of North Carolina campus (Chapel Hill, Pembroke, Ashville, Wilmington, Greensboro, Charlotte) were considering giving instate tuition to undocumented students.

No financial aid, but its a hell of a lot cheaper than out of state...I'm just happy my Associates of Science degree is being paid for in full =S.

If you want to know how I'll tell you, but this won't apply to many of you. If you know any people who are about to enter highschool , whether they qualify for the DREAM Act or not, I implore you have them look at options in an early college.

They are just like any other public highschool, but with a catch. You take college classes while in highschool (not AP, the real thing), think of it like dual enrollment. The early college either has its own building or hallway dedicated inside or next to a partnering community college where they take their highscool courses. Their college courses they take in the actual buildings and classrooms with typical commnity college students. (In my freshmen and sophomore year in highschool I took about 3 in total between those two years, but now as a Junior I'm a full time Community College student. I'm still technically a student of the Public school system though, and the state is paying for everything at the out-of-state tuition rate, including books. Other school materials come out of your pocket (obviously) (take that conservative North Carolinians). Oh and btw in NC illegals aren't allowed to attend community colleges, this program lets me.

A few things to keep in mind.

-Early colleges are generally 5 year programs; however, some do finish in 4 or 4 1/2

-Earn a 2 year degree at no cost, and 1-2 years early

-While early colleges do look at your grades from middle school, its not the only thing they look at. Extracurricular, letters of recommendation, and an essay.
I made striaght As my 6th and 7th grade year but my 8th grade year I stopped caring and got B's and C's and still got in.

-Part of the public school system so your status should not stop you from being accepted; however, from my personal experience the only way you will get in is if you have an ITIN. I'm the only undocumented student in my class, except I have an ITIN. We had another girl who is undocumented (my mom knows her mom) but she dropped out, she also had an ITIN. Everyone else is either a permanent resident or a citizen. (I know this cuz they all have their licenses right now lol)

-Early colleges are SMALL most do not exceed a maximum capacity of 400 students. Some class sizes can be anywhere from 40-70 and vary on a year to year basis.

HERE IS WHERE YOU HAVE AN ADVANTAGE
Early colleges tend to cater to first time college goers (in their family),
underprivileged or underrepresented groups. (In my school whites make up 40% of the student body).

THINGS TO LOOK OUT FOR
Do not be put off if an early colleges focuses on a certain career pathway like "Early college of integrated technology, or engineering, or health sciences." Since the degrees you get are Associates degrees in Arts or Science this does not matter! The career focus is there for people interested in those career pathways and are given priority for internships and volunteer opportunities (at a hospital for ex)

Here is a link where you can find them.

Keep in mind, only freshmen are admited. However, in my school sophomores have been admitted at rare instances.

You can put Rice on there as well. I emailed them and explained that I was an illegal immigrant and they said that they would consider my admission as an international student. On their page they also say that they have need blind financial aid for all students although it's a lot more strict for international students since you need to prove that you have money to pay for all 4 years of tuition to get the visa in the first place so you wouldn't otherwise get the financial aid. This is probably different for illegals because we don't have the visa and can prove that we're dirt poor.
