Florida Sen. Marco Rubio said Monday that President Barack Obama’s move last week to block deportations for some young illegal immigrants in the U.S. has likely derailed his own similar efforts, at least until after the election.

“People are going to say to me, ‘Why are we going to need to do anything on this now. It has been dealt with. We can wait until after the election,’” Sen. Rubio said in an interview. “And it is going to be hard to argue against that.”

In conceding that his own push was likely dead for now, Mr. Rubio also expressed anger at how the White House made its announcement Friday without consulting him or other members of the Republican Party. “We have never talked to anyone in the White House about their plans,” he said. “The only thing the White House has ever done about our ideas was to try to get some of the Dream Act kids not work with us.”

The Dream Act, which would have granted residency permits to some children of illegal immigrants who entered the military or attended college, died in the Senate in 2010 after Democrats failed to gathered sufficient support to overcome a Republican filibuster threat. In recent months, Mr. Rubio has floated proposals to present his own version of the act, but had yet to table any actual language.

In the interview, Mr. Rubio blamed both Republicans and Democrats for lacking proper perspective on the issue. He expounded at some length on the need for legal changes to acknowledge that many illegal immigrants in the country came for the right reasons.

“We have to recognize that these are human beings, the vast majority of whom come here in search of a better life and better opportunities,” he said. “We have to approach this issue with a level of strong compassion for that human element as well.”

But he blasted Mr. Obama for taking what he called “an election-year action that in the long-term is going to have negative consequences.”

The president’s unilateral declaration on Friday, Sen. Rubio said, “sets back our efforts to arrive at a balanced and responsible approach to this issue. It poisons the well. It leads to mistrust. It makes it harder to come up with a long-term solution.”

This guy is a moron. He is angry because the president did what the repubs would have never done. He thinks this derailed work on DA and its chances of passing? well guess what DA was never going to pass the Repub house. The Repubs have no interest in working on immigration.

Since 2001 they have been showing no interest in working with dems to solve this issue. in 06 or 07 they killed the last major chance they had to fix immigration.

Now they are angry because the presidents actions "poisoned the well"? Guess what, the GOP poisoned the well long before Obama came along !!! They have no intention on fixing our immigration system, aside from Mass Deportations and border enforcement. They will use what ever excuse they can pullout of their asses to not give brown people any type of relive.

notice how every type of sb 1070 bill has been introduced by Milky white old folks. Any type of federal DA has been blocked by the Milky white old people.

But how is Romney going to defend himself when he's asked about the Dream Act? Why would they skip the opportunity at the biggest stage and not introduce Rubio's legalization proposal?

I know it's political game but you can't avoid it when you're a politician.

That idiot is just making up reasons to not introduce his version of the DA. And/or delay it as much as possible. I've already started going back to the notion that we should push for the real DA because that is what we completely deserve. Not some shitty visa.

I understand your frustration but what I've realized through my confusion is that just because all of my friends around me are US Citizens, doesn't mean that I completely deserve a citizenship.

Let's be real. You can't just go into other country for tourism and then all of a sudden settle down to live there for the rest of your life.. which is kind of what our parents did..

We're not getting any visa. We're getting work permit and fyi, that work permit is going to put the food on your table. Just last week, we didn't even have one.

I'm going to continue to push for DA but meanwhile, let's be thankful for what we have (not satisfied. that's different).

Let's not give off the impressions that we're ungrateful, perky bastards (or at least until we gain the political voting power)..

And Republicans show their true colors. Just a week ago there were a lot of people here blaming Obama for not doing anything, but the true enemy to immigration reform is the republicans. They are so hell bent on making sure that Obama is a one term president that they will not do anything productive until the election.

Let this be a lesson to you.

I understand. I am very happy that this policy change has been issued, but as of now i am worried whether or not i will actually get the work permit in my hands (i am almost done high school btw). I don't think i can demonstrate any "economic necessity" as of now, so i hope they still let me apply for it when i get to college (granted that i will still hold deferred action until then).
