Hi everyone,

I just received the I-765 and I-821D notifications! And from talking to USCIS, they said that it will take up to a month to receive my biometric appointment letter. Many people seem to get theirs within a week of receiving their notifications... Is the process slowing down?

Also, does anyone know how long it will take to apply and receive the SSN?

What about for driver's license?

I am 20 years old. Do I need to get the learner's permit first, wait 18 or so months, and then test for the driver's license?

Sorry for bombarding the thread with so many questions.

Many thanks!

No one process is the same.

You do not need a permit, but you still have to pass the written test.

Thanks! I came across this, and I have a question:

"What do I do when I am assigned a social security number (SSN)?
Once you receive a SSN, you must use that number for tax purposes and discontinue using your ITIN. It is improper to use both the ITIN and the SSN assigned to the same person to file tax returns. It is your responsibility to notify the IRS so we can combine all of your tax records under one identification number. If you do not notify the IRS when you are assigned a SSN, you may not receive credit for all wages paid and taxes withheld which could reduce the amount of any refund due. You can visit a local IRS office or write a letter explaining that you have now been assigned a SSN and want your tax records combined. Include your complete name, mailing address, and ITIN along with a copy of your social security card and a copy of the CP 565, Notice of ITIN Assignment, if available. The IRS will void the ITIN and associate all prior tax information filed under the ITIN with the SSN. Send your letter to:

Internal Revenue Service
Austin, TX 73301-0057"

What if I have an ITIN, but I have never filed taxes - as I never had a job or any source of income? My parents have filed their taxes using their ITIN number, if that makes any difference.

Also, when presenting passport and birth certificate for the SSN, does an expired, translated (with notary stamp) birth certificate work?

If I pass the written test, will I be able to test for the driver's license right away? Or is there a wait time?

Yes, after you call them to let them know. However, I was wondering if I still have to call them, if I never had a source of income and did not use the ITIN number.

When you apply and are granted an SSN you're ITIN does not automatically get rescinded, you need to tell IRS.

SSN needs the original un-doctored, un-translated Birth Certificate.
They need to verify Age and to get your parents info, something to do with IRS benefits etc, that is the sole purpose of collecting that info.

Do you know if you can use an expired i-94 passport, U.S. passport, and college ID in place of the birth certificate? My parents lost the original, and the process to obtain another one is too long. I only have the copies of the birth certificate.
