Hello all.

I was wondering if any Nurse majors here would answer some questions

1) Is Nursing doable for someone with a weak stomach? My stomach isn't exactly weak, but I have not been desensitized enough to Hospitals, Clinics etc. to be used to it

2) Do Nurses always clean up after a patient? Is there a higher tier of Nurse that deals specifically with assisting Doctors or something? Or is clean up always something any Nurse will have to do once in awhile at least?

3) Is this a straight 4 year type of deal or is it more a 5 to 6 year path?

4) How are the hours?

5) How is the pay?

6) Do you find it fulfilling?

7) Are there more advantages or disadvantages to being a male Nurse?

Any answers would be greatly appreciated, Thanks

I've worked with nurses before. Probably wouldn't help you that they were ER nurses. In that aspect obviously it'll be gory. One of the things I did not expect while being there was to be frozen at the idea of bandaging an HIV positive patient that's bleeding profusely. I've always thought I would be okay with it, but actually being 2 feet away from them made it VERY real. Thankfully it wasn't my job to do. This patient had hepatitis,HIV and other things going.
I would take my experience with a grain of salt, since I'm sure you could do other things.

Interesting, that is pretty intense.

You worked with Nurses, as a Nurse in training? Nurse Assistant?

I am undecided on becoming a nursing major I have a couple more weeks to decide BUT I have been fortunate enough to intern at the best hospital in my area for a couple months. I will answer based on what I observe and what the RNs tell me.

1) Is Nursing doable for someone with a weak stomach? My stomach isn't exactly weak, but I have not been desensitized enough to Hospitals, Clinics etc. to be used to it

It depends on the floor, for my interning experience, we had rounds. I Agree with the top comment ^^ my first day at the ER cops had to hold down a guy that was high on bathsalts. haha it was one of my favorite floors. On the other hand there are also quiet and tense rooms such as ICU.

2) Do Nurses always clean up after a patient? Is there a higher tier of Nurse that deals specifically with assisting Doctors or something? Or is clean up always something any Nurse will have to do once in awhile at least?

Nurses should know how to handle mess, but usually the Nurse Assistants are the ones that are assigned such duties. There is a Head Nurse in each floor, if thats what you mean.

3) Is this a straight 4 year type of deal or is it more a 5 to 6 year path?
Good Question, not sure but i know That there is one year when you have to do clinical rotations, not sure if its after becoming an RN or while. Sorry

4) How are the hours?

Most work 3-4 days a week 12/hr shifts

5) How is the pay?

I think the average is about 60k/year, not bad. It depends on what type of nurse you want to be. I think ICU nurses get a little more.

6) Do you find it fulfilling?

I think seeing patients getting back into good shape because of the good care you provide is very fulfilling in my point of view.

7) Are there more advantages or disadvantages to being a male Nurse?

I think their is nothing wrong with being a male nurse, they're are becoming more common, my brother and one of my closest friends are studying to become a nurse.

With a lot of overtime, it's possible for them to go close 100k, but that's working your ass off. It also depends on your location. If you're an RN in a big city you get paid more.($30/hr or more) while my RN buddy in Lubbock, Texas makes less than $25/hr.

Source: Knows a lot of nurses.

1) Is Nursing doable for someone with a weak stomach?
It is. Once you go through nursing school and are around it more you may get used to it but if not I don't recommend you get a job in the ER or work on a trauma floor. There are so many fields of nursing where you don't deal with any of the gushy nasty stuff, you just have to get through nursing school

2) Do Nurses always clean up after a patient? Is there a higher tier of Nurse that deals specifically with assisting Doctors or something? Or is clean up always something any Nurse will have to do once in awhile at least?
As a nurse in the hospital, you deal more with medications, dr orders and any other treatment and teaching. There are nursing assistants that are there for personal care but that doesn't mean that you won't ever have to clean someone up every now and then. You will definitely need to know everything about personal care and trust me you will have to do it in clinical during nursing school

3) Is this a straight 4 year type of deal or is it more a 5 to 6 year path?
It depends. If you go for your LPN it's about 1 year. Your RN will be about 2 yrs for prerequisites (more or less depending on how quickly you finish them) and about 1.5 yrs nursing school. I finished my RN in 3 years because I did summer classes and I did my LPN in high school and got credits for that

4) How are the hours?
Depends on where you work but in the hospital it's 12 hr shifts

5) How is the pay?
The pay is very good. I've made anywhere between 65k-90k/year. That's in Fort Lauderdale so it may be different where you live. Plus that's when I had my work permit

6) Do you find it fulfilling?
I would say so. I went into nursing because they offered the LPN program in high school (free) and I didn't think I would ever be able to go to college because of my status. I figured if I ever got a work permit at least I'd have some sort of trade. I've stayed in it because I really liked it and I actually feel like I'm doing good

7) Are there more advantages or disadvantages to being a male Nurse?
The only disadvantage I've heard of is that male nurses aren't typically hired on obstetric floors. Otherwise the advantages and disadvantages are the same all around, male or female
