Hello everybody, I hope everything's going great for you all (if you're still waiting, keep your head up, it will be approved soon ).

Thankfully, I already have my SSN, ID, and DL. However, I'm still a bit hesitant about what to do with my income tax for previous years since I never reported anything because technically I wasn't working. Any tips? How did you all handle this? I'm asking because I need it to see if I can get the Texas Grant for school. Any help is appreciated.

Need more info... what you mean by technically not working? Were you working under the table and paid cash? Not working at all?

If you were paid cash and never reported anything (or never did any income taxes), then IRS might come for you or it might not. I wouldn't touch any previous years if that's the case. Get the SSN to your current employer asap so you can do it right.

If you did income taxes every year before this one and it's legit income, then you can transfer those earning to your new SSN by going to the closest SSA office and presenting your income taxes from each year and asking to transfer those earnings to your new SSN.

This thread should help: http://dreamact.info/forum/showthread.php?t=33829

Hope that helps.

I would just avoid the previous income all together and start fresh. What you could end up paying in back taxes might end up being more than the grant that you might get for school. If you're still with the same employer, you're better off updating your info and start doing your income taxes next year.

They only care about the previous year income tax.

You have to be specific. Were you working or not? If yes, can you give me an idea of how much income you were bringing in? How old are you? If you do want to report income, you most certainly can by filing a Schedule C assuming you were getting paid off the books but do not show any expenses. Did anyone else in your household file returns for those times and claimed you as dependent? Did you work in 2013 with ur new SSN and file ur 2013 return?

State income taxes are amusing things, as not a soul wants to pay them but every person wants the things they pay for. Some states are mulling switching entirely to sales taxes, but the arguments for and against sales taxes and state income taxes are equally compelling. Many jurisdictions allow notional deductions for individuals, and may allow deduction of some personal expenses. Most jurisdictions either do not tax income earned outside the jurisdiction or allow a credit for taxes paid to other jurisdictions on such income. Nonresidents are taxed only on certain types of income from sources within the jurisdictions, with few exceptions.

I've always been working under the table (or desk lol), and have had a checking account for ten years now (I've deposited the money there); I'm 29. I've never used my ITIN for anything other than to open the credit card accounts (which have been helping me pay for college, which is not a smart thing to do but is the best I can use), and I've never filed for income taxes (that does NOT mean they weren't being paid).

I know that I won't get any federal aid, but maybe I can get the Texas grant, or work study (I still will try NOT to get any student loans), I just wanna make sure to fill out the FAFSA properly.

I asked because I wanna know what some of you have done. I don't want this to bite me in the back in the future.

We don't qualify for FAFSA. If you have never filed a tax return I would start fresh like previous posters stated since you will likely have to pay if you do them.

In Texas we have the option of sending either FAFSA or TASFA. Instead of doing FAFSA online though we send it straight to the schools financial aid office. We send FAFSA/TASFA because we're not barred from receiving financial aid from the school.

I know, and unfortunately couldn't apply. I'm almost done with school, plus, I'm fine with paying for my education as long as I have a job.
