Haven't really seen any topics on this, so i will just start one, hopefully i can be sticky if it turns out good.

I'm 19 about to be 20 in November, live in Houston, TX, and even though I'm still illegal I really want to start planning now to move out by the time I'm done with college or 21. I have savings of 3000+ and hope to get it to 10000 by the time i move out and also this plan includes the dream act passing so i can continue school and get a job.

I was hoping if anyone who has moved out recently, is planning to move out, or has thought about moving out can provide any information about the process or how they plan to move out.

I don't really want this thread to be about me, but just general information that can be used by anyone seeing how we are all in similar situations.

So i just wanted to get the ball rolling and ask a couple of questions.

What are things that i should be thinking about now?
House or apartment?

Location?, this can be in general or specific since i said i live in houston, i would like to live close the med center, since i would most likely be going to school around there.

What would be the cost i would be looking at monthly?

Finally, when do you guys plan to move out and what are you'll plans so far?

I will add more question later, i am very early in the process.

well what do you really mean by moving out?
moving out your parents house, city, or even country?

what i think you mean is moving out your parents house

well i think i can be some what helpful. as i live in the east coast and most things here are more expensive it might be a little hard to level it out. if you plan to move to a metropolis you have to know that everything in the city is more expensive. however, this is compensated by the fact that jobs in the city are better paid. from my experience i can tell you that making a budget for all your fixed expensives is a must to keep up to date with your bills. if you in a saving mode, STOP EATING OUT.

so i'll give you a landscape of how much a paid a month
rent= $500 "4 bedroom apartment 4 roommates 2 bathrooms in a nice part of the city"
bills= $250 "electricity, heat, subway pass, phone, tv, and internet"
food = $400 " i eat out a lot, im still not a good cook"

i have other fix expensives like helping my mom and grandma but i know most of you wont have to deal with this. i also try to save half of my paycheck each week. so i spend an average of $1,600 a month including all this things plus going out on the weekends, but then again i live in a east coast metropolis.

hope this helps...

Hi,

Im also a dreamer in Houston. I am 23 and let me tell you that i have the same concerns as you.

I am also in the process of doing the same. I live in the NW of the city and have to commute A LOT to go to school and work.

Some of my concerns: Family

Although i could afford to get out and be on my own or with a roommate, there is the itchy thought of helping out the fam. However, we all gotta grow out of this some day, right? (Thats a separate discussion tho)

So, here is the breakdown,

Consider gas these days wherever you end up going. If you plan to go to Rice for example since you mentioned you want to stick around the med center then you can just bike.

Now, if you want to stick around the midtown area of Houston consider paying a rent (on your own) of about 600 average. This is like the heights area or if you want to go cheaper place, try like finding a warehouse (i have found some really good ones close to the George R Brown center.... these places are usually pretty big in dimensions and you can always share space with others.

Now, i was shooting to actually buying a house. These days it is not so hard to find student roomates. You can start ur mortgage and not have to pay the entire monthly amount by yourself...

Do you know of this website: www.craigslist.com

Peace

Thanks for the responses so far.

to daflyboy04:

$500 for a 4 bedroom apartment is great. I haven't seen that in Houston.

I thought about 1500 is what i would spend every month, I need to get a job soon.

I can cook if it involves a microwave and ramen noodles...

to juli_con:

I also live in the northwest part of houston, by hwy290 and 34th and commuting to UH has been a pain since i cant drive and UH is southeast.

Yeah i am hoping i can live close to where i plan go to school in 2yrs so i wont have to drive and just bike or use the rail to get there.

the sharing a house is a good idea too since apartments will be expensive around that area.

I would love to hear any others suggestions.

Im not no expert in Houston, TX. but 500$ a month is relatively cheap then out here in NV/CA. if you want to stay in Houston, TX that be a good thing. But definitely not eating out a lot is a big way to save money. also try to look around, as far as apts. go. do not get the first one that accepts you. Saving money is a def must when you live on you're own.
