DONA ANA COUNTY, N.M. — A woman who is in the country thanks to the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program was arrested Monday morning after she tried to smuggle three immigrants into the United States illegally through the Interstate 25 checkpoint near Las Cruces, according to court records.

Irania Martinez-Martinez drove to the immigration checkpoint north of Las Cruces with three men in the vehicle, court records state.

The Border Patrol agent at the checkpoint questioned Martinez-Martinez about her citizenship. She told the agent she was a U.S. citizen and handed her Texas ID card to the agent but didn’t give the agent a valid driver’s license, the document state.

Martinez-Martinez told the agent they were going to Albuquerque.

When the agent asked the men in the car about their citizenship, they did not reply, according to court documents.

According to the court documents, Martinez-Martinez appeared nervous.

The agent told her to drive to a secondary inspection area for further questioning.

Once there, the three men admitted to not having any immigration documents and said they entered the country illegally, court documents say.

A database showed that Martinez-Martinez was not a U.S. citizen but rather a DACA recipient.

Martinez-Martinez received her DACA status in April 2017, records showed.

She was charged for the smuggling attempt and her DACA status will be taken away.

Sounds to me like she wasn’t smuggling them but instead had them as passengers, but of course, when your riding with someone illegally and you go through a checkpoint that it’s classified as smuggling in today’s era.

Why would you lie and say that you are an American citizen? She could've just said she has DACA... Now she can never become an American citizen.

Yeah it's not like a citizen can magically smuggle in people. She had nothing to gain and everything to lose.

anyone giving ride to their friends without paper within 100 miles of the land/sea border is doing the most stupid thing in the life. they have setup the checkpoints even in northeast which is thousands of miles away from southern border but is withing 100 miles of the sea shore. think hundreds time before you giving ride to anyone without a document.
this article has more details and a map of US showing what comes within 100 miles of the border.

I would as long as you are not going from the border to the interior and you are driving with close relatives, you should be fine.
