Hi Everyone,

Although it has been awhile since I have registered, I just recently began reading the forums...so I am fairly new. As such, I was hoping you guys would be kind enough to help answer a couple of urgent questions for me (I will also run a search as well).

1.
I need to travel to Indiana (Indiana University specifically) from here in California for a dental school interview. I do not have a drivers license, but instead have an expired passport, an ID issued by the Korean Consular (located in Los Angeles), and my grad school ID. So my question is: what travel options exist for someone like me?...Rather, what would be the safest way for me to travel to and back from Indiana?

2.
Dental School tuition is obviously VERY high...and I am in the process of locating potential loan options. I think I may be able to get my uncle (US citizen) to cosign for me for a loan, but would this work?...are there loans out there that lend approximately 30~40K per year?

Dental School has been a dream of mine and I have worked hard for it for a VERY long time. So any and all help/info/advise would be GREATLY appreciated!!!

Thank You Everyone!!

well traveling in todays post 911 america can be difficult for anyone no matter your legal status . that being said your School ID should be all you need to travel to Indiana but you have to be more alert and use as much common sense as to not present yourself in manner that would draw attention to CBP/ICE. But there is still the chance of getting detained by CBP but the chances are very small. I've flown to L.A from Detroit many times and gone to
Florida many times in the past 3 years but i have Drivers License so maybe thats why i havent had any problems. but its up to you if youre willing to take the risk again its very minimal the chance of getting stop by CBP.

Traveling by air in my opinion is safer than going by Greyhound especially since it would take more time by bus thus exposing you a greater chance of being stop by ICE especially recently there have been alot of buses pulled over by ICE.

the only time that you'll see CBP/ICE in large number will be at whatever airport you choose in California. in other states their presence is less . You will still be exposed to TSA at any airport but their job is not really to question you legal status but to verify you identity so yourSchool ID should be enough but if they wont accept it then use your consulate ID then as last resort your expired passport.

WHAT are you talking about??? No, you cannot fly with your school ID. I would not fly at all, if I were you, MBU. And yes, of course you're fine because you have a driver's license. Please, be careful what advice you give to new members because they might just follow it without knowing the consequences. That was extremely irresponsible of you.

Please, at least attempt to use punctuations...

Also, everytime this issue comes up, people pop up and say things like "well I flew with my school id/expired passport 5 times last year and it was fine." In my opinion, that's like saying, "I've driven drunk many times but still haven't been pulled over."

The consensus is that yes, you can fly with non government id's but the chance of running into that ONE TSA agent, who will want to verify your immigration status is still there. Nevermind that it's not part of their job, it happens, and we've heard about it.

You can fly at your own risk without a government ID, but many of us know the potential consequences of our lives being turned upside down, and that risk shouldn't be taken lightly.
