hello. well i was curious if it was possible for me to get health insurance. i came to America when i was in the 3rd grade and have since stayed until now (i am 19 now). Ive always had insurance through a school program system. I was wondering what the policy was for an illegal immigrant to get health insurance. I am a resident of california

I have no identification except my old high school ID's and now my defunct University of California, Riverside ID card ( thats a whole different story on its own )

I get health insurance through my job, but if you cant find a job with insurance benefits you can get your own insurance by paying for it out of your own pocket it can get expensive but it might end up being cheaper in the long run then finding yourself with a huge ass hospital bill later on. and it also helps defend the argument we put a huge load public health care even though we all know we cant get public health care from government.

Undocumented residents are not eligible for publicly funded health insurance programs such as Medicare/Medicaid or MediCal in California or other public health insurance programs.

You can obtain health insurance through your university as long as you're a student there or through an employer if they offer health insurance benefits. The other option is to purchase health insurance on the private market which can be relatively cheap for a healthy individual.

The misconception is that private health insurers are slimeball corporations who are interested in gouging people's money but thats not really true. This usually necessitates that people use publicly funded health insurance programs, which can be burdensome and bureaucratic.

Most state attorney general websites have a listing of private health insurance companies. Or use the power of Google.

Private organizations can also be burdensome and bureaucratic. Don't you know someone who works in a big giant corporation? I do. Corporations can be slimeballs and sometimes they are not. The truth is somewhere in between. But they'll really like you if you're healthy but will be pickier as you get into your middle years and/or are sicklier.

Medicare are for those 65 and older, Medicaid are for really poor people, and SCHIP are for kids. You have to have paid into the program (and if you have worked and are legal, then you have) to be eligible for these programs. Legal kids (well they're parents) have to register with your state to be eligible for SCHIP since they administer the program.

SCHIP is really popular garnering over 66 votes in the Senate (I wish Dream could get that many!) needed to expand the program but the House couldn't get the 2/3 needed to override Bush's veto (they were about 12 short of 290 I think). Both Sen. Obama and Sen. McCain support its expansion. Medicare is also popular with the older set (as you can imagine) and even President Bush supported Medicare's expansion for Medicare Part D dealing with Prescription Drug subsidies.

Check my post here for more health care discussion!

Individual (aka portable) health care is expensive since you need a pool of people for cost savings to materialize. Also, Companies offering jobs in the lower end of the income bracket don't usually offer health insurance like Wal-Mart and fast food places. But custodians for universities, hospitals, or big companies can be part of their company's health insurance pool.

I agree with other people that a university's health insurance system is your best bet.

well I dunno about other states but in california Medi-cal is availabe for even undocumented. But you have to be super poor or super old. My dad had Pneumonia few years back and we weren't "poor" enough even with 20,000 debt. Nor was he over 65, after a week of hospitalization and few surgeries, BAM 55,000 debt~
