US Rep. Ashley Hinson says she supports a 'DACA fix'

Republican U.S. Rep. Ashley Hinson, who has said border security is a top priority going into the next session, stated Friday she would support a "DACA fix" that would allow children of undocumented immigrants brought to the U.S. illegally to remain.

The future of the Deferred Action for Child Arrivals program, or DACA, remains unknown going into President-elect Donald Trump's next term. Stephen Miller, who Trump recently tapped as his next deputy chief of staff for policy, told the New York Times last year that Trump will again try to end DACA.

"I think that that's something that there is actually broad bipartisan support for," she said Friday on Iowa PBS's Iowa Press. "I think that's a case where many of these children were brought here through no fault of their own right, and I think that's a completely different conversation than the mass encouragement of asylum-seeking that we've seen under the Biden administration."

The program allows young adults who came to the U.S. from the southern border as children by entering the country without authorization or overstaying their visa to legally live and work in the U.S. under specific guidelines.

DACA has had continuous legal threats, including Trump's first attempt to remove the program that the U.S. Supreme Court blocked in 2020 with a 5-4 vote.

Former President Barack Obama created the program in 2012 through executive action. Over 530,000 young adults in the U.S. fall under the DACA program, according to U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services June data. There are over 1,300 DACA recipients who live in Iowa and Omaha, according to the same data.

Hinson has co-sponsored the America's Children Act, which would have resolved the DACA program's problem of aging out recipients and losing their legal status. She said Friday she doesn't think that's fair and fixing this issue is a priority for her in the bigger conversation about legal immigration reform in Congress.

"We have these kids who, for example, came here with their parents when they were 5 years old," she said. "They're Americans at this point, and they've gone through our education system with legal status with their parents. And in many cases, they're getting engineering degrees from the University of Iowa, or they're really smart people who we want to keep here."

Hinson has voted against legislation in 2021 that would have given a path to U.S. citizenship for DACA recipients. She cited concerns about President Joe Biden putting an “open” sign on the U.S. southern border through several executive orders.

Hinson focusing on illegal immigration in next term

Hinson said Friday curbing illegal immigration is also a top priority for her going into her third term in Congress.

"President Biden on day one signed a whole bunch of executive orders changing the scope for immigration and what that looked like at our southern border, so I hope President Trump does the same on Jan. 20," Hinson said.

Trump has said he wants to see a "mass deportation" of people living in the U.S. without authorization carried out across the country.

"We're going to have the largest deportation in the history of our country, and we're going to start with Springfield and Aurora," Trump said earlier this year, USA TODAY reported.

Hinson said her priority is deporting people who have committed crimes and are living in the U.S. without authorization.

"People need to take a look at what's happening and probably consider self-deporting if they're here illegally. They should have that conversation. But I think the most important thing is, we've got these gang members, sex crimes perpetrators," she said, mentioning the recent conviction of a Venezuelan man who murdered an American woman.

The Storm Lake Times Pilot reported this week that Sen. Joni Ernst, R-Iowa, told Storm Lake High School students they shouldn't be concerned about Trump's "mass deportation" plan.

When asked about what Ernst said, Hinson said she's hopeful Iowa communities won't have "huge disruptions" from Trump's plan for deportations if they focus on people who are criminals and living in the U.S. without authorization.

She said she thinks members of Congress need to assess how much federal funding is going to cities if they don't comply with the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement to carry out the deportations.

"I would hope that our local law enforcement are willing and are able to partner with our federal agencies. I don't think we have those kinds of problems here in Iowa, like I was just referencing with some of these places that are indicating they're not going to comply," she said.

Hinson said she'd like to discuss the country's workforce visa program and legal paths to U.S. citizenship in Congress after criminals who are living in the U.S. without authorization are deported.

It's sad because they all know it's the right thing to do yet does another thing.

Sucks, man. Both sides want to take credit on fixing it.

When Democrats try to fix it, Republicans block it.
When Republicans try to fix it, Democrats block it.

It is what it is. Politics as usual.

Fug bros. What are we going to do when the Republicans give us the deal of a lifetime? Whatever happens in 2025, we will finally have an answer to DACA.

It would be irony of the decade if some permanent daca fix happens under trump admin. Maga would go crazy calling it “amnesty” and at the same time rabid leftists would go crazy for it not being comprehensive enough.

Any solution republicans give us will be nothing short of what daca is ( or a raped version of daca) at the cost of stricter regulations

Oh hey stricter regulations are coming anyways so no republicans don’t need to give a shit about us
