One of the immigrants was Sergio Carlos Gomez, a 30-year-old railroad worker, who has been a DACA recipient since 2013 and said he has never missed a renewal deadline for the program. Last Thursday, while coming back from work, he got pulled over at an internal checkpoint, which are locations where agents check the legal status of the drivers.

He showed his work permit to the officer, but was still arrested and detained.

All the while, his family had no idea where he was or what had happened to him.

"I thought I was going to be sent back to Mexico," Sergio said. "My parents, they would worry about me being sent back to Mexico. I was seven years old when we came over here. If I get sent back to Mexico, I don't know nothing about over there."

When immigration officers asked him to sign documents, a nagging feeling in the back of his mind stopped him.

"When he was asked to sign something he didn't understand, he did not sign it. This could be a way different story if Sergio had signed those papers," a spokesperson for FIEL, an immigrants' rights organization said.

No immigrant is safe in the US anymore. Not after this weekend. The machine is in full motion. This is possibly the new holocaust.

There is a difference between arrest and detained.. the guy with daca was detained and released after ice verified and ran his identity. He was not arrested. This standard police procedure when investigating a crime.

The other guy does not seem to have dace because it says he came to the US in 2018. In addition, ICE won't release him if he has a deportation order.

Wrong.

Detention doesn't last overnight!

I don't see in the article where it says the guy with daca was detained overnight. Also, no details were given on what papers he was asked to sign but if they ask him to sign self deportation papers, he has the right to say no, when he used.. I don't see this interaction as a reason for added fear in the daca community..

I am not sure about the other guy in the story. We need more details

"He showed his work permit to the officer, but was still arrested and detained. "

Literally says "arrested."

You left this part of the article out.

When he was detained, he was told he had an order of removal, which his attorney said is false.
Not saying that is true, but whatever the story may be, this doesnt surprised me. At least they let him out back home which is important. What sucks is that in places like Texas is only going to get worse because of that recent DACA ruling.

Even if Texas revokes work authorization, he is still protected from deportation. So being a DACA recipient in Texas still worked out for him in this case.
