New Mexico......Anybody made the trip.

I plan to make the trip over there in a few weeks for a DL, anybody been there? I think i need some advice.

I been meaning to go but need someone able to already drive. I checked the area called 'downtown' and also the area where the hotels are. NM seems to be made drivers, mostly highways.



p.s WA works too but certain people that have not gone to to school in the USA would not be able to get a licence there. -depending on what proof of identity from the USA you already have.

I was given that quote by one of my professors, really got to me, so I've used it ever since.
I think this quote applies to mostly all of us because we have grown so much knowing were are undocumented but we still strive for more. I least I do.

hey, I am currently have NM license by made trip from TX to albuequque NM. From my experience there are several things prepare before go up there.
1. Proof of resedency
you gotta have some type of untility bill like electricity or water, gas under your name. This is the hardest thing to prepare because you are not there. I had person that i known for few years so I use his address but I don't know how others did. Then you need another bill such as cell phone, and other bills.
2. passport or other govt issued ID
3. Driving Test result.
well....once you prepare 1 and 2 then you come up here to take driver test. I recommend you to use driving school to take test. it's written and actual driving test which is piece of cake. Some school let you take test until you pass and actual driving test is like going through the street for 5 min. all you need to do is drive carefully and signal. Then they will get you paper result.
4. MVD (motor vehicle division)
MVD is new mexico version of DMV or DPS. once you finish 1-3 it's time to wish little luck. There are two check point before you get your license. First check point is information desk. This is the most unpredictable place I ever faced. I went there and lady check all the documents and ask for SSN. even though SSN is not require they keep ask for it and try deny if you don't have it. In my experience I had SSN since I came here 1992 but it's only for work with authorization(according to them) so my SSN is not for make bank account, get drivers license, get a car and loan.....wow what a BS. So I failed first day. I went to other MVD next day then failed again so try another one. finally i pass through information desk(i think i was lucky lady didn't read word on SSN card) then I wait for second check point then here we go this lady saw my SSN and told me I can't do with this one. I was complained then she went to talk to her boss. when she came back she said i need to have EAD to use with this SSN. Then she told me since first check point pass you. you can have license if you don't use your SSN. I said yes why not.......how odd.

here was what happened to me when I try to get my DL. I still have no idea how to get through first check point without have SSN because they send you back to bring SSN. Sound like it is required. but Once you pass there if you are good enough nice enough lucky enough second check point is not that hard because of first check point. Also don't afraid if they let you go. try other place with new people. Some people are nice enough to help you out. Of course SSN and status still not require in NM so good to try.
BTW I recommend you to pay more to get 8yrs license for your convinence.

There they made it seem as if it was made up, but looking up on google, it seems like the quote might have been real after all.

umm, this is a little confusing, so are you saying that once you have passed the tests you still have to deal with the "MVD"?, oh I wish I couldve gotten an 8 yr license.
