I have nothing, zip, zero, nada (as far as SSN's go) I have a tax ID # and that's it. Anyway I'm being offered this internship doing what I LOVE....

Paid internships require a SSN. So go for the unpaid ones. Make sure you do internships that aren't connected to the government. Some unpaid internships ask you for DL, but you can just say you don't drive.

Hope that helps.

It depends on your field. Right now I'm interning at one of the worlds most famous living photographers. You'd think they'd go by the books, but they don't. Never asked for anything.

Try going to the career center and ask for internship opportunities, and just find out yourself if they do require a SSN. I don't see why an unpaid internship should require a SSN. You can try job search engines, some have the option to search for internships. You can also try contacting your local non profit organisations and see if they offer any internships.

Good luck

Ignore what the counselor said, call up a place you are interested in doing an internship at and talk with them. No need to even tell them you don't have a SSN over the phone. See what their process is, they may require an interview etc. If they bring it up then give them whatever line you want to about not having it, however, most places will welcome unpaid help and so it should be easy to convince them to let you do your internship there.

If it is a government type place then you may be SOL as they have specific guidelines to meet and so, no matter how flexible the person wants to be, they may just not be able to let you in the door.

Remember that many places which don't advertise internship opportunities do have them and so don't be afraid to just call em' up and ask.
