has anyone here been able to successfully get into grad school?

im about to graduate undergrad and i really want to get into a graduate program in the biology/chemistry. Anyone know of any universities in which undocumented students have been able to get into grad school?

I talked to some officials at my university about graduate school. I was told there is no way in hell I can get into a graduate program. I am about to finish my 3rd semester as an undergrad. I still have time. Good luck to you sir. I wouldn't despair if I were you. There is always a way. Besides, quitting is never an option.

mandeep- Can I ask why they told you there was no way you could get into grad school? Plus you're only a sophomore, so you don't even have to worry about applications to grad school yet.

There are many DREAMies who have gotten in graduate school. Schools do not care about your status... just like your undergrad university. They only care if you are able to afford it... and of course if you can actually get into the program depending on how well you did in your undergrad courses. I just applied and I'm waiting on the decision. Just apply to the schools you want to go to. If they ask for proof of legal status, tell them your situation. They'll most likely not care as long as you can pay up.

Well see I talked to physicists regarding this. A physics graduate student has to do research to get his/her PhD. Thats the only way you get your PhD. For that you need to be employed by a physicist at that university. To be employed and for your mentor to pay your tuition, you need the legal status. Otherwise, graduate school for physics can cost A LOT. Now I assumed that would be the case for biology/chemistry program. Your PhD Thesis will involve research.

I guess you just need to talk to the university.

When someone tells you there is no way in hell, make sure there REALLY is no way in hell. The local news station here in Texas has a section one day out of the week in which they ask an immigration rep all sorts of questions, one that is repeatedly asked is if undocumented kids can go to college and she says absolutely not, that they have to leave the country and get an F1 visa first. I think she's full of shit and it angers me to hear her say that because there are kids missing out on college because they believed this bitch.

By the way, I was wondering the exact same thing. And yes, MAGraduate has a masters I believe, so I know grad school is possible but the challenge here is, how in the world can we afford it?

I agree with you. Don't just believe people. Don't just take their word for something (part of the reason why I cant follow religion).

I'm finishing up my first semester in graduate school. I'm getting a Masters in Food Science. There is a 9 credit research requirement and though you can be employed or funded by a Proffessor there is only so much money to go around, so I'm just payin for my own research credits for now.

The university that you are attending will probably accept you in their graduate school, specially here in Texas. I think they will only look at your undergrad transcript and that you applied for graduate school. The only thing is that you will have to pay for your courses, scholarships at the graduate level are very limited perhaps that's because they assume you can get assistanships, or that you can work for an advisor as RA or TA while doing your masters. I graduated with a Masters and money was very limited. Some of the professors wanted to help but since I don't have a SSN there was no way that they could help me(assistanceships).

Sounds like the physicist employment part is optional but you're saying it would cost too much if you don't get a paid internship? Otherwise you can get accepted just that it would be too expensive to go without a way to work?

Or is the internship a requirement to graduate with a PhD? Maybe other schools can allow you to get your PhD without having to get a paid internship.
