When my mom went to renew her license, they asked for her SSN and she said she's waiting for it (which she is, we already filed in 2001) and the lady told her to mark "affidavit" and they gave her the new one. Good luck!

If you have a driver's license from Tennessee and you SSN is on file with the Drivers License department you can renew online oor go to the automated kiosks in the Drivers License Station. That way you avoid explaining anything.

I believe same is true for California. If you happened be LEGAL at the time of initial issuance of Driver's License, they do not require proof of legal stay for replacement cards (which is the same EXACT procedure and form used for renewal, according to the CA DMV site).

I was legal at point and got my License in high school. Since then, I have lost many many license from drunken nights and I was able to get a new one without showing them any proof of SSN (even though I have one), visa, green card, citizenship, etc.
