I would like to apply for an undergrad TA position at my school. I am not sure if the position is paid or not. Do you guys know if they would require papers in case the position is paid? What if it is unpaid- do they check for status?

If it is a paid position they will require a SSN, they need the number to keep track of where the school money goes. If the professor wants to work something with you he can award a scholarship, that however, can work if the the professor has enough funds. If it is unpaid, I don't think there would be any problem but you will be working for free.

I received a position as a T.A. and I paid generously however because we can’t be paid I simply told them I didn’t want to be paid and would rather just get a great recommendation if my work warranted so. They were happy with this and I was allowed to T.A. At no point did I mention my issue with paper work.

Not all students have permission to work. You can just explain that to the professor that you are not permitted to work in the US but you are interested in the opportunity and ask if you can get paid by textbook reimbursements. You will not be on the books then.

Those are all great ideas. I am going to try them out at my school this semester.
