So I heard they're letting some immigrants into the US Army who has some legal status. Does anyone know the specifics to this? Too what extent are they willing to let a non-resident into the military?

So they are starting to allow people with legal immigrant status like student visa, working visa and such into the army. It's a pilot program, they are only allowing first 2000 or something (not really sure about the number). I believe it is only in the state of New York that they are implementing this. Just not pertinent to us... my friend is on international student visa and thought about it but he's in California so he doesn't qualify. Apparently they will give you a citizenship after four years of serving in the army, i was pretty jealous when I heard that.

It is called the MAVNI recruitment program or Military Accessions Vital to National Interest. The program is not for visa overstays,EWIs or those who may have fell out of status.A person must have the following non-immigrant visa status in order to apply & qualify if they have the right skills:E, F, H, I, J, K, L, M, O, P, Q, R, S, T, TC, TD, TN, U,V, asylee, refugee & Temporary Protected Status (TPS).The applicant must also be in that visa status for at least 2 years prior to enlisting.

You can check out general information concerning the program here & info concerning the MAVNI program here, all courtesy of the Shusterman website.

BTW,they give U.S. citizenship in 6 months not 4 years & you can apply immediately if you're in active duty status.

I have my employment authorization and it's pretty much a green card but it expires much quicker and you can't leave the U.S. and get back in because it would be considered abandonment. It looks very identical to a green card and come also with an alien number.

I tried going to a recruiter again today and I'm not sure if he knows what he's talking about but he looked at my card and says "that's good", I'll see how everything goes from there.

What a silly experiment. It's such a security risk compared to us that were raised here.
