Aww I love SF! I went a couple of weeks ago and they didn't check. At least not from San Jose to San Francisco. But I'm pretty sure they won't check from LA to SF, you're not going anywhere near San Diego so you're good!

You're gonna love it, make sure to go to pier 39, fisherman's wharf, and china town.

I live in LA and went to college up in SF. I did multiple trips back and forth yearly and I never had any problems. This is both driving with people (carpools) and on the greyhound.

There is no immigration check points if you are coming up from LA to San Francisco I have gone several times to LA and back without ever seeing an immigration check point of any sort.

SF is a beautiful city with a lot of culture make sure to visit china town, golden gate bridge, alcatraz (plan ahead since tours can be sold out), and just downtown San Francisco in general.

Don't worry about it. There's no check points or anything.

Also don't forget to check out the Union Square area. It's really nice.

If you guys are driving I recommend taking HW1 either on your way up or back down to LA. Also, if you are a student, make sure to ask for discounts at museums, and the more touristy attractions, you'll save a few bucks that way.

Also, go get ice cream here:

So delicious...SF is foodie heaven.
