Quote:
John McCain sounds angry and frustrated that, despite the risks he took in pushing immigration reform, Hispanic voters flocked to Democrat Barack Obama in last year's presidential contest. McCain's raw emotions burst forth recently as he heatedly told Hispanic business leaders that they should now look to Obama, not him, to take the lead on immigration.
The meeting in the Capitol's Strom Thurmond Room on March 11 was a Republican effort led by Sens. McCain of Arizona, John Thune of South Dakota, and Mel Martinez of Florida to reach out to Hispanics. But two people who attended the session say they were taken aback by McCain's anger.

Having stuck his neck out in the past, McCain apparently is in no mood to do so again for an ethnic group he seems to view as ungrateful. On NBC's Meet the Press on March 29, McCain repeated his message that the ball is in the Democratic president's court. So far, the senator said, he has not seen much on immigration from the Obama White House, although the president recently met with the Congressional Hispanic Caucus and set the goal of launching the debate in the fall, a senior administration official said.
Asked on the show whether he would work with Obama on the issue, McCain said, "At any time, I stand ready. But the president has to lead."

I don't blame McCain one bit for being mad.

Btw, is John thune like a big opponent of CIR? Hopefully, he has come around on this issue.

We should lobby Mr. McCain to cosponsor the Dream Act. He's usually one of the first to cosponsor the Dream Act every time it's introduced.

Here's Mr. McCain supporting the Dream Act during his Presidential run.

I also don't blame him. When he turned around, all the people he has helped for years weren't behind him anymore. He has to feel betrayed. The problem wasn't with McCain for most people, but with the republican party.

Edit: John Thune was there? Does he now support reform? I know he wants to run for president. Maybe he want to start building support? We should find out him position.

Edit: His statement:

I believe that, before we deal with those illegal immigrants already here, we must first secure the borders of our country to effectively cut off the flood of illegal immigrants. Otherwise, we will be dealing with illegal immigration on a much larger scale a generation from now. Immigration is an important and vital aspect of America's history. However, while we are a nation of immigrants, we are also a nation of laws. It is imperative that the problem of illegal immigration does not overshadow America's ability to reward those who choose to lawfully become a part of our national fabric.

He sound a lot like what McCain was saying during the election.

You guys are actually with John McCain?

Wow! You have short memories, don' t you?

Your beloved, victimized "maverick" threw all immigration reform under the "talking express" because he had to get the backing of the far right of the Republican party!

He even missed the vote on the DREAM Act on purpose!

He got what he deserved, and the voters gave him what he worked for, especially the Hispanic population.

He even said that he would have voted AGAISNT for his immigration bill, the McCain-Kennedy bill, if the bill would have come up for a vote during the presidential campaign.

He flipped flopped on a core subject for hispanic voters. I am even surprised he got that many votes.

Barack Obama can't take immigration reform at the moment. Can't you understand it? Will you guys be like the people in Spanish radio that have messed it up for us?

This country has laws, and as much I love this country and respect it, if tomorrow the government said, "leave," I would leave because I was not born here nor legalized. If the Congress gives us the DREAM Act, then GREAT! but if it does not, I respect this nation's sovereingty.

This country will give us what it CHOOSES to give us. We are not entitled to anything. We must work for it.

Juan J.

When did he release this statement? Also, the borders are being secured pretty good right now because of the drug wars etc. They can't(i hope) use that excuse anymore once the debate comes up.

^ That's basically the same thing Thune and the restrictionists have been saying before but in different words.

Amnesty is a slap in the face of legal immigrants
As much as I would love to get Thune's support, we have to be realistic.

^^^ I understand what you are saying, and that is what I think also.

I just found it strange that an anti-immigrant Senator would be at an event to outreach to the Hispanic community with two other senators that supported immigration reform in the past. Unless he was there to play devil's advocate.
