I'm from California and I'm applying for a couple of scholarships. One of their requirements is my parents 2008 federal tax return AND my own. My parents included me in theirs.
I have to write a written explanation as to why I don't file taxes. Normally I just say I don't work, because technically I don't. But I wrote about how I make money to pay for college in my personal statement.
My parents tell me there's a limit of about $6000, if you make that amount or less, you don't have to file taxes.
I've been searching in the IRS website, but I can't find that exemption rule. Even if I found it, how would I word it to include that law/rule to express my situation?
