The American Public Understands the Real Economics of Immigration Reform

Recent focus groups on immigration reveal that despite the economic downturn, the American public wants an immigration reform that provides a path to citizenship for the undocumented. Celinda Lake, head of Lake Research Partners, notes:

"If anything, the economic climate has actually improved the environment for immigration reform, at least as far as the public is concerned…A silent issue is that reform would make immigrants all taxpayers."

It seems that the American public is finally getting the real economics of progressive immigration reform. Immigrants contribute to our economy as workers, consumers, taxpayers, and entrepreneurs. As I have argued before, our economy will benefit from progressive immigration reform that provides a path to citizenship. With immigration status, immigrants would open more businesses, buy homes, and integrate fully into our economy.

In essence, progressive immigration reform will boost the economic contributions of immigrants and strengthen the economy.
