White House postpones immigration meeting, again - Page 4

I was 20 in 2001 when Hatch's initial DA came up. I was naive and overly enthusiastic about the possibilities that I wouldn't allow any info to spoil my fantasy. Then case cosa forums and the same don't-tell-me-santa-doesn't-exist fantasies. We're so wedded to this moment; now...we desparately need something to pass that we react with deep cynicism, and attack any viewpoint we consider contrary to our belief. So we cling on to flimsy promises from a wiley politician, and ignore the fact that his promises not only keep changing but they're no longer firm promises. We overlook every hint from his administration that they would prefer tackling this issue NEXT year!

I'm not 20 any more. If you want to keep clinging on to promises that no longer exist, go ahead. I can't blame you. But be wise to hedge your bets. I'm moving on with my life with or without DA or CIR. This includes marriage, starting a business with college friends. I've put life too long on pause because of promises from politicians. Be careful with how your approach the legislative process. I would hate to see some of you 5 years from now waiting for your lives to restart. Good luck.

At the very least,we have a date & the time can be used to promote Dream act *hint* *hint*.The Hispanic Caucus also appear to be making some sort effort in the House behind the scenes.

This is all strategies probably used to ensure it passes. Politics is not a black and white thing. I do not think President Obama is postponing it because he is trying to ignore it. On the contrary i believe he is doing it because he sees it as the best way to help it pass. Political world is a complex world, and only those with accurate information on the situation and good strategies can succeed.

Lets see what happens! Sometimes all talk at these meeting come up with nothing so it might be a good thing if DA is just attached to some education bill as opposed to some big debate meeting or talk fest.

I think we will see DA attached to an education bill and then CIR debate will be had later in the year or early next year.

I don't know where you're getting your numbers.

Democrats are posed to gain seats in New Hampshire, Missouri, Ohio, and Kentucky. And the only Democratic Senator in danger of losing is Chris Dodd, but his numbers have been improving consistently (although he still trails Republican Rob Simmons). Even if he were still really unpopular come 2010, he could always get a primary challenger (Merrick Alpert) who would easily carry the heavily Democratic state.

If you've never taken a formal stats course, you have no business discussing the accuracy of professional polls.

I don't think anyone believes that we can just sit back and let politicians make good on their promises. But the notion that since this meeting is being rescheduled yet again, we should defenestrate all the political gains we've made so far is equally childish.

I have no idea where you live but if thats the consensus then you should move.

Where I live the consensus is this and this is virtually a direct quote: "I don't like illegal immigration as much as the next guy but the current immigration system is a joke." And pretty much all of the people around me, adults as well as people my age, berate the people who stand in front of 7-11s holding signs that say "Deport illegals", and not the hard working part of the immigrant population. Americans do get annoyed that a good portion doesnt speak english, and a lot of them do make jokes about the Latino part of the population, which is inappropriate, but it's not the same thing as opposing illegal immigration. The only people who do complain are the ones who lost their job directly to an illegal immigrant, and guess what it actually doesn't happen that often. They might inadvertently set the wages in certain sectors, but they do not "steal" jobs simply because they cannot compete in majority of the sectors without legal papers.

The only people that would say that, are really ignorant people who watch Lou Dobbs and do not understand anything about how the world works. Yeah, let's just deport a good portion of our population whose hard work is one of the biggest reasons for low prices of produce as well as other services. Who cares that majority of them do pay taxes yet have no access to refunds and most govt. services. They should still get deported because....because I don't like them. Ask a person with a job, a student, or even just a person with half a brain.
