anyone have experience with UNPAID internships?

I'm getting offered some unpaid internships.. wondering if anyone has experience with giving SSN. I would assume SSN is not required because it is like "volunteering." Can anyone confirm? Thank you.

It usually depends on how big the company is.

I've done some in college that doesn't require any. If you're in school, you can also get a form from your department to earn college credit.

You're right, there usually aren't any forms to fill out if the organization is small or medium-sized. I'd stay away from giant corporations, because they are more likely to ask you for ID and a SSN, do a background check, etc. I have first hand experience in this.

A lot of the business degrees require some sort of out-of-class real world experience. I've been a little bit weary of declaring a business major, because I don't know if I'd be able to fullfill the internship requirements, etc.

I was in intern for a federal military branch and they assumed I was a citizen. Ironically, I was given a federal I.D. card for access to their military base, I also used one of their databases. The internship was unpaid but a good resume builder.

Can anyone tell me where do you find these unpaid internships?I have browsed the web so much and I can't find any.Maybe because most companies require security clearance for aerospace engineers.If anyone knows anything please pm me or post a link.

do you go to school? your school's career center is the best place to find internships, part time jobs, full time jobs. most schools have an online database that you can browse now.

I've done several unpaid and semi-paid (stipend) internships. They ranged from boutique agencies to large big name companies, and I didn't have a problem with either.

i am CURRENTLY doing an Unpaid internship and have had no issues. you should be fine.

I’ve done two internships and one apprentinship in the fashion industry, and they’ve left me with a bitter taste in my mouth.

Be careful and make sure that you don’t put yourself in position where people can take advantage of your situation…

Its also a double edge sword, even if you find a company where there might be a possible job opportunity, at the end of the day, you’ll need a SSN to properly work for them, however; I don’t want to discourage anyone from looking in to a possibly internship.
