This is according to Roll call concerning what Press Secretary Gibbs said today.
Quote:
The White House on Monday acknowledged that immigration reform is unlikely to move in Congress this year.

“I can see the president’s desire for it to happen but understanding that currently where we sit the math makes that real difficult,” said White House Press Secretary Robert Gibbs.

Obama will meet with a bipartisan group of lawmakers Thursday to discuss the issue at the White House.

Gibbs added that Obama hopes that “later this year that we can have the beginning of formal debate on that.”

Obama has consistently put other priorities — including energy and health care reform — ahead of an immigration bill, hoping to have both approved in 2009.

I'm just going to graduate and leave. I've waited for 17yrs, plus I take only 2 classes each semester because I pay out-state tuition. The government doesn't care about the immigration issue. Obama is all politics meaning false promises. I still have two-three more years until I finish my degree and if nothing happens in the next two or three years, I'm leaving this fake "american dream" country.

*If nothing happens in 09', I doubt anything will happen in 10' because of an election year.
Two more years wasted!

He isn't talking about Dream act,FrankV.I'm guessing the Press Secretary is talking is about Comprehensive overhaul mainly.I'm still of the opinion that the Senate Majority leader will have to satisfy some of his constituents by bringing up some immigration legalization program.

It will require lots of action on our part this year, but the problem still lies with comprehensive groups holding Dream act for a Comprehensive reform bill.

I don't know what I dislike more: the media or politics.

Basically we have been hearing the same thing for the past 2 months: It is going to be really difficult to pass CIR this year!

but the headlines for this same quote have been:

Negative:
1)"Immigration reform unlikely in 09"
2)"Immigration reform lacks support of the White House"
3)"Obama vague on the issue of immigration"

Positive:
1)"Immigration talks planned to start in the Fall of 09"
2)"Obama reiterates his plan of introducing CIR in 09"

Of course these headlines are from memory because I didn't feel like searching for the exact ones but we all know what I'm talking about.

Why can't they just say something like this: "Uphill road ahead for overhauling immigration law" (kansascity.com). Very unambiguous and to the the point. Come on guys, this issue is too important for editorials.

As for CIR/DA itself, this is my last year. I have already saved up $1500 for a plane ticket home, and if nothing gets started by November, I will be spending my first Christmas in 10 years in my home country. Even though I will be dirt-poor for a while until I land on my feet at least I'll be home.

What the hell does formal debate later on in the year mean anyway?

it's awfully quiet in here. where are all the true believers? ...ya know, the ones who would gang on Bruinman and dismiss some of us as being pessimists? I'm sorry for all the expected heart breaks. Take it from someone who was around in '01 for the first DA: never trust mere words from a democratic. I like to think of myself as very progressive, but dems are a very spineless breed. And though I believe Durbin means well, I suspect he never brought up the DA to be a stand-alone bill, and it therefore won't go anywhere.
Do what some of us did: HEDGE YOUR BETS! I went back to school and will be done next May. At which point, I can take my degree, work experience, and multi-lingual proficiency and take a stab at the UK/EU. (let's hope a Columbia degree is the right ticket)
If with almost 60 senators, about 240 congressional seats, and the excutive branch, democrats are too chicken to even mention immigration, ask yourself this: under what circumstances would any immigration reform bill pass? Not 2010- midterm elections; not 2011- re-election campaign/less political capital; 2012- you can forget it; 2013- repubs gain more senate seats/stronger and more defiant; 2014- Hispanics aren't a constituency he needs- he's already in his 2nd term. So 2015?! You're pushing 30 or approaching mid 30s and still drinking that coolade and waiting with crossed fingers for Obama to deliver on a promise he can freely say he never actually made? If nothing happens by June 30, 2010, I'm out.

Yeah I'm out of here after my graduation next May if nothing happens. I decided to do a Masters primarily because of the DA. I won't be sad leaving here even though my siblings are here, because I know other countries will be more than happy to acquire my skills. And not to mention I will be free to travel and do anything I want. America is nice but it isn't the only place where one can have a great life.

mugi: We're here boo, waiting to see what happens on June 25th.

Btw, I never said CIR would come up for debate this year. My point was that it's up to Obama to decide whether or not CIR comes up for debate. That's not our decision to make. Personally, I'd love for the Dream Act to come up on it's own or for it to be attached to some other bill.

Forget CIR, If DREAM does not pass this year that's a major setback for us.
