i talked to some dude today and he told me that when troop levels are low, they let undocumented join the army and give them green cards. he said that this opening began a few months ago and will probably close in a few months from now. i have no idea what he is talking about, anyone know more on this subject?

I read they are letting some people join the armed forces if you have some type of VISA and are fluent in languages they need. I was actually at an Air Force recruiter and he told me with the economy the way it the've had many more people interested in joining than in previous years.

For more info go to the military.com forums and look up a thread I saw about your specific question. When I read it, they basically said if you don't have a green card you cannot join.

the program you are thinking about is MAVNI program. undocumented people CANNOT join the military. under the mavni program one must be in the united states legally with a valid visa for at least 2 years.

long talk short, just go read for yourself...

http://www.defenselink.mil/news/mavni-fact-sheet.pdf

btw, just because you need the requirement doesnt mean you can get in, they have limited spaces, and they only select the best candidates in the korean news article i read couple of days back, only about 1/3 got accepted. currently military put hold on korean and chinese because way too many enlisted and they no longer need any more, they said they need more indian and obviously arabic speakers.

*i told my friend (who is a legal dreamer) to jump into this option and take the chance, he took too long thinking over it and by the time he talked to the recruiter he was rejected because dod no longer wanted koreans*

Righjn is correct,Joining the army also doesn't confer a green card as it wouldn't make any sense. Many of the positions in the Armed forces require *security clearance* & that can only be associated with US citizenship not a Green card. This is why those going through the MAVNI program will become US citizens in short order.

Not to mention that there won't be any purpose in being a citizen if you end up dying in action.
