I have a dream that one day this country will open its doors and show me her true colors. I was born into poverty like so many of us if not all. My parents decided when I was three to cross the boreder. When we first arrive here I was homeless not much better than in Mexico. Through out my life I lived in poor communities (not much different from any of u guys). Growing up poor was hard...I was using drugs and looked to my local gang for support. One day I realize that crime does not pay...go figure I was always broke...lol not much of a drug dealer I guess. That day I figure my parents risks their lives in desert to bring me here. I straigten up my act and I did something that I never thought was possible, my last two years of high school I had a perfect 4.0. My school really didnt a shit about us tho, so most of the senior class ended up going to the community college. I put myself through community college. I did so by washing dishes from 4 pm to 4 am (god hard ass job!). But I have a job and I am grateful. Now I just graduated from my local community college (an A.A. in political science). I am going to attend the University of California, Davis this fall, however, I have no money. I dont know how I am going to pay for it...its hard to think after all of this I might not go. I cant find a scholarship nor get a loan. I was browsing the net to see if I can find any help and I came across this site so I figure I might as well join. Well I have faith in god (like am sure u do) I know god will help me attend I guess. Well I got way off lol. I am very active and very vocal. One of my hobbies is going out and volunteering. I am in love with community service. So if anyone needs me I am here ([email protected]). Well I am, like u are, hoping for the Dream act to pass. This is a hard task, and it requires hard work to get this done, however, I know that hard work accounts for many accomplishments

Great story and a testimony.
You pulled yourself together and here you are,
attending UC Davis. Yes, money situation is tough,
but keep looking and ask for help everywhere.
I certainly encourage you to keep up the hard work
and don't lose your momentum. I hope to hear from
you one day with your complete American success story.
Thank you for sharing.

Hey great story...

but there is one thing that bothers me. You say you were born in poverty like many of us if not all...

I think that stereotype of undocumented immigrants is one of the main reasons so many people are against our dreams. Being illegal does not mean you are from Mexico. It does not mean you have to be poor.

I myself was born into a pretty wealthy family, however due to some health problems of another family memeber , MY family decided that it would be best to move to America. So we did and hired a lawyer right away and have since had 8 (EIGHT!!!!) lawyers and we are still "undocumented."

This system is broke. We did everything right and nothing has been fixed. Thousands of dollars in attorney's fees and the closest answer we got was a letter which stated they had lost our file!!!

So please don't be ignorant about who undocumented people are. They come from all around the world. They come in every color, rich or poor. Educated or not. They come for different reasons.

I honestly think that if we can let go of this stupid stereotype of immigrants then it will be easier to move forward.

Congrats on your accomplishments. Life can be tough, but you'll learn so much from overcoming those trials.

Now about funding your school. I honestly don't know if you will be able to get funding to pay for Davis as it is a government school and you are doing your undergraduate. Many might disagree, but I would suggest that you go to a Calstate, as it is affordable. Besides, you can still get into a good grad school even if you go to a Calstate. I have friends from Calstate that have ended up in Duke, Yale, and Med Schools. My girlfriend went to Calstate and she is getting her Masters at UCLA. The amount that you will spend in one year at Davis is enough to pay for the 2 years that you need to finish your B.A. at a calstate.
