Actually there are videos on the web that a guy actually pulls that line many many many times and he gets away. However just because he pulls it off doesnt mean you can do it. If you have nothing to fear, then you can probably try saying that, but for people like us, it would take more guts to say something like that than to lie about your status. That is bad advice.

do they check passengers? or do they only check the driver's DL?

traveling from Dallas to Austin is no big deal just stay under the speed limit because they sometimes have police under bridges checking car's speeds.

The drive is pretty safe... I've done it a couple of times, but then again I was lucky to get a dl before TX got all strict on licenses... My family and other people I know had done the same route too and they've never had any issues. I didn't come across any checkpoints but take it easy on 81, since small town cops are jerks!! (I got pulled over on a road trip to NM for speeding) Only had to pay it off... Good luck!!
