and this raises a question. Should I be worried about interning in a lab that might sometime in the future do some work for the defense industry?

I know when I interned in a university lab through a high school internship program I saw a lot of projects that had military applications in mind.

That gets a little bit trickier, are you already accepted into the program? have you done all your paperwork?

lol, I think there may be a mis-understanding in what I typed. the program I mentioned was one that I participated in while in high school about 3 years ago, there were no checks of any kind (and I credit this to knowing a few people including the director that matched me with a mentor in a couple labs).

What Nick mentioned to beware giving information for security checks for defense industry directly, and what I wonder is about other labs that are not the defense industry but may have them as clients and do research for them or in collaboration with them, with their money as sources of funding, as its very commonly the case in university labs.

I have yet to complete the paperwork, and mostly due to worrying about what kind of checks they may do, today is the first day i read this thread and its giving me new hope towards actually applying for internships as i had originally hoped.

As far as I know, they would need your explicit permission to run the check. Don't take my word for it though.

If they are working toward government contracts, chances are they will perform the checks.

i just started an unpaid internship with a small company that does web hosting, pc repair, and server colocation. on the job description they said that they accepted only citizens and permanent residents, but i sent in my resume anyway. i never had to fill out any paperwork or go through any background checks. definitely a good opportunity to build my resume until the dream act passes. be resourceful, kiddies!
