I recently found out that some of the hospitals in my city allow college students to volunteer at their hospital. Especially if they are majoring the in the medical field. (My college goes by a point system, instead of a waiting list for medical programs, thus volunteering adds points to your app) Does anyone have experience in volunteering at a hospital?

Yea, I volunteered like 150+ hours for Glendale Memorial Hospital. I was at the behavioral science floor. That is when I realized that I did not want to be a medical doctor.

I was a volunteer at St Vincent Medical Center back in high school (i worked at the business office). After high school I tried to volunteer once again, but everything went down the drain when they asked for my SSN.

But who knows, maybe it is different where you live Ed

That's so cool. I hope that's what I get to do when I begin volunteering at my local hospital. What kind of stuff do you do?

I tried to volunteer at my community hospital and that went down the drain when they told me that I needed to prove I was here legally. *sigh*

I've never had any problem with volunteering, and I've definitely never had any volunteer coordinator tell me that I had to prove my legal status. Them asking you to prove such thing is an indicator that they may not be as helpful to you as you would like them to be. At the end of the day, volunteering is suppose to be an experience that should yield some utility.

In the OR? That's awesome. I figured volunteers only guide people around the hospital and stuff like that. That's usually what I've seen volunteers doing around the hospital at home.
