I'm going to be a senior this year. Probably graduating around 3rd or 4th in my class. ...(I edited out my information for my own safety).... Summarizing, I am comfortable to say I think I will get into most colleges I apply for, with the exception maybe of Ivy Leagues. I'm applying to all private schools, in-state, so that I can commute, for room and boarding is another 12 thousand a year that I will not have.

How do merit-scholarships work? Do you think I'd have a chance at something close to a full scholarship or are those for really extremely exceptional people? The counselors at my school don't really care, and have denied any help to a friend in a similar situation. I know many of you did get into college. How was the process? What should I put in the application? Should I wait to talk to colleges about the situation after they've seen my application and know who I am beyond status? Should I just talk to them now? My parents, like most of yours did I believe, know little, if anything at all about the college process. I'm sure anything you guys can tell me about this whole thing will help me, and beyond, since I want to share it with my friends who are going through similar struggles.

Another question many people fail to answer me. What happens if I don't go to college waiting for the Dream Act to pass, for a semester or two? Would that destroy my chances at good merit-scholarships?

Thank you very much,
God bless you all, my fellow dreamers..

I really think you have a shot at getting a merit scholarship. You have great grades, EC's, and if you have a kick ass essay then I think you'll be all set.

I started a thread not to long ago so you can check it out for some information on colleges that are need-blind and full-need and also on scholarships.

http://dreamact.info/forum/showthread.php?t=12272

I know somebody else asked, but what state are you in? and what states are you looking to go to college to?

-best of luck.

Since you mentioned it? Any tips for the essay? Did you guys mention the situation at all? I kind of didn't want to, so I don't sound like a victim. A lot of people go through all kinds of problems smaller or larger than this, so I feel it shouldn't be about that. Maybe mention it but not focus on it?

I don't know... anything would be helpful.

You don't have to sound like a victim! Mention it but make sure to focus on how it has made you a stronger person, don't make it seem like such a negative thing. Showing that you were able to persevere will be a HUGE plus.

I say you try applying to schools where you might be able to get a full ride, regardless of what state they are in.

I know my top choices have given out full rides to people with resumes similar to mine. Of course that is in a case by case basis, but still.

I'm also applying for colleges that aren't that good, some not very good at all (in comparison), because I feel they might value me more.

Also, I'm afraid of getting a good scholarship and not being able to use it.

About essays, would any of you that have the file or your essay be willing to let me see it? I've only read one college essay so far, and I'd like to know what one of a dreamer looks like. I really need to get going on that.

Desperate Dreamer,

Your stats and resume look really good. Seriously. They are like mine, maybe better, and I got into a couple of good schools and two ivies. PM if you want me to help you out a bit with the whole college application process/financial aid stuff/essays/etc. Don't limit yourself to apply only to schools in your state. Private schools are usually very very generous with financial aid, so apply to wherever you think you see yourself going to! I'm glad that you found this site though cause there are a lot of dreamers in your same situation that are helping each other out! =)
