GUADALAJARA, Mexico — President Barack Obama says immigration reform is important but says other priorities such as his health care overhaul and financial regulation are going to come first.

Obama said on Monday that he expects to see draft legislation for immigration overhaul by the end of the year. He says he doesn't expect to be able to snap his fingers and change the politically charged immigration system.

Obama expects a fight regardless of his standing in the polls and declares that he is ready for a fight. He says the system is broken and nobody can deny it.

He says, however, that changing the immigration system is going to have to wait until next year while he focuses on other priorities.

We have a broken immigration system. Nobody denies it," Obama said. But politically and legislatively, it stands behind health care, energy legislation and an overhaul of financial regulatory rules on Obama's first-term agenda. "It's very important for us to sequence these big initiatives in a way where they don't all just crash at the same time," he said.

I guess we can rule this year out.

yeah i hate it too, but what can we do? it's out of our hands. I'll just pack my bags if things don't work out in 2010. After all, it is America that is missing out on our talents.

WAIT? Till when? He's starting to lose my listening ear in all of this. He's changing his tune each time he opens his mouth. Whatever happened to his "One last point I want to make on the immigration issue because we may be moving to different topics: Something that we can do immediately that I think is very important is to pass the Dream Act, which allows children who through no fault of their own are here but have essentially grown up as Americans, allow them the opportunity for higher education."
Next year is an election year so that makes it even more challenging with these gutless politicians. Just show some integrity and say exactly what you think and quit being spineless......

I usually dont vent here but I had to let that one out. I'm done now!

As much as it sucks for me to even think this, I don't think I'll be here past 2012 if there's no path for citizenship by then. I'll be 21 this year, and I'm already "losing my vision" of the dream, like the girl on that article said (the one that just got her green card). After the last 4 years of understanding I can't be anything that I worked so hard for in the past 10 years, it tears me apart to know that my whole life is now in the hands of some politicians.

I don't want to sound like a jerk saying this, but are you sure you have been listening? He has been saying early next year for quite a while now. He said the same thing in a different article last week. He also said the same thing at the June 2009 immigration meeting. "Start late this year, and ramp up in early 2010."

I've avoided saying this, but some people are a little quick to overreact to any bit of perceived bad news. It gets a little ridiculous sometimes.

Ok I dont take any offense to what you said because obviously you dont know what my situation is hence my frustration. However, my point to saying he's changing his tune goes back to his run for president as I quoted in my previous comment. Maybe he made a similar comment last week but going back to when he was running and when he got in office his stance on DA/Reform has changed. I'm more concerned about his change with the DREAM ACT though. Hope I have clarified my previous comment because it is far from an "overreaction" in my humble opinion.
