But the delay is a clear departure from the promise Mr. Obama, then a senator, made in July 2008 at the four-day National Council of La Raza convention, which attracted more than 20,000 people to the San Diego Convention Center.
"I think it's time for a president who won't walk away from something as important as comprehensive reform just because it becomes politically unpopular," the Illinois senator said. "I will make it a top priority in my first year as the president of the United States of America."
Sen. John Cornyn, Texas Republican, criticized the president for backtracking.
"I am disappointed he has changed his tune," Mr. Cornyn said. "Immigration reform is long overdue and belongs on President Obama's full plate."
Mr. Obama supports a broad bill that would legalize undocumented immigrants and put them on a path to citizenship. He voted for the 2006 immigration bill, which passed the Senate but never saw action in the House, and for the 2007 bill, which was defeated in the Senate.

Is cornyn being for real this time about supporting CIR? He always says one thing and votes against it when the time comes lol.

Here is a copy of his full statement on monday.

Quote:

he Texas senator said in a written statement released Monday that he supports immigration reform.
“Today President Obama backtracked on his promise to address comprehensive immigration reform during his first year in office," Cornyn said on Monday. "After stating several times on the campaign trail that it would be a ‘top priority,’ I am disappointed he has changed his tune. Immigration reform is long overdue and belongs on President Obama’s full plate."
Cornyn went on to ask President Barack Obama to make immigration a priority again.
“It’s important that immigration legislation protects our borders, promotes economic prosperity in Texas and throughout the United States, and is consistent with our American values of compassion, family, and opportunity," Cornyn said in his statement. "I urge President Obama to reconsider his decision and put immigration reform back on his priority list."

LOL.... i think John Cornyn is playing politcal games, because next year is election year. most republicans know if they are not support the CIR, and hisp. won't vote for them. in my point of view, john cornyn try to push all the fault to Obama, and make him look good........but he is a flip-flop anyway, we all know that.

It's all pr/damage control:

Quote:
Several activist organizations called for immigration reform in front of U.S. Senator John Cornyn's office in Harlingen on Monday.

La Union del Pueblo Entero (LUPE) and several organizations told Action 4 News that they wanted to show their dissaproval to what they're calling the Republican Texas seantor's unsupportive behavior for Latino issues.

Although Senator Cornyn's office was closed, the picketers called him by cell phone and chanted in unison for better representation for the Hispanic community
Quote:
"We feel he needs to represent us also," Sanchez said. "We're under his jurisdiction. We also feel he needs to represent us as Hispanics because we got very disturbed when he didn't publically support Sotomayor and that gives us a sign he's not representing us."

Anybody supporting to take on Immigration earlier rather than later, regardless of political party, is welcomed in my book......Those who ruined the efforts of passing it before are eager to make-up the ground work. Took them far longer than I wished but later is better than never I suppose.
