By Law; you are not required to have a SSN, to enroll in school, or to participate in any of its activities. Unless it's leaving the country for a field trip or to study abroad. If they do ask you, just say you do not have one. As far as health insurance goes, you can get it through the school, you dont have to go a private company. When I was in high school, they had separate insurance for students playing football, since it was a contact sport, it was much more than the basic one. Which was about 60$ a month, back in 04'

Like Ed said, you do not need a SS#. I played 3 years of Volleyball and I didn't have any problems. As far as insurance...just look in the newspaper and you'll find some that cost about $50 - $70 (one payment only). You just have to show the insurance card to your coach, they usually make a copy, and that's about it. You can even cancel the subscription once you get the card. And...if you're a good player sometimes the school finds a insurance company for you and they pay it.

Back in the day I would always go to a pediatrician in a private hospital, but one time we went to a community clinic and they gave my mom a form to fill out. I think it was called LA Kids. I believe it's an insurance for low income families for people under 18 run by the state of California.

I had a bunch of injuries in high school and the insurance took care of everything. We just had to pay like a $5 deductible for physicals, physical therapy sessions and all that. Saved me from some pretty big hospital bills and embarrassment from telling the coach I couldn't file for the school's insurance because of no SS :]

Florida has something similar for low income families. In fact it is very similar to the plan that Obama wants to implement. If you make under a certain amount per year per person, they will give you in Miami at least this sort of insurance which basically covers everything, and prescriptions are $5 each, no matter the real cost. It has saved my parents during situations that could have been potentially life threatening, we discovered it after the school insurance that I had purchased did not cover an eye infection I got from contaminated water in the school's swimming pool leaving us with a bill that took us about 2 years to finish paying (such programs are not really advertised that much, so it can be a challenge finding them if they exists). I don't recall the name at this time but if you are in the Miami or florida area then PM me and I will try to get back at you with that info.

I dont know why they are asking for a SS, You already are enrolled in the school. And anyways, if they cannot deny you entry because you lack a social. Most schools i know of do not require you have health insurance, only that you have a physical at the beginnning of the semester or school year
