I was talking with my friends about the Dream Act and they asked me when it would be an official law...
is there an official date?
will it take many years?
No offense but this is the question the majority of new members make when they join the forum .
The answer is NO BODY KNOWS!
The current situation is that congress is debating other bills (I believe health care reform right now). Charles Schumer a democratic senator from New York was according to Univision.com supposed to come up with a draft of a CIR bill. However Schumer says he is holding off because he wants to find a Republican co-sponsor of such a bill. Now we all know that the Dream Act is a separate bill. But it was until very recent that other senators have said that piecemeal legislation might be a better approach. Up until very recently the talk has only been about passing CIR and attaching the Dream Act to that.
When a bill goes to congress it must go through a bunch of steps before becoming a law. There must be a general vote in the Senate and House and then it goes to a joint committe for a vote there then to the president for a signature. However none of these votes are scheduled until they almost happen. And to top it off the Dream Act is not even being discussed right now in neither the Senate or House.
So if you want a answer with a date you're not going to get it anywhere. But please stick around and try and advocate in favor of the dream act so that it ends up passing sooner rather than later!
