By the way, this really intrigued me. Is there a high risk of this happening?
I was wondering what would happen if I show up without a green card or proof of citizenship at the airport the other day. Would they question me? Not care? Arrest me?

I mean, there is no middle ground: you're either really rich, or really poor. I was in the latter group, so that's why we came here. I mean, my dad didn't have a reliable job - he just drove delivering items to warehouses, and my mom couldn't find one herself - she put money on the table by doing odd favors. Times may have changed, but that's how things were when I lived there.
Dude- Shithole?!? I think ur way off. I think ur letting the fact that Poland tends to be a bit on the homophobic side cloud your judgment about the entire country. It has long history (many historical sites/cities to visit), great night life, you can swim in the sea in the summer and go skiing in the south in the winter. It has a rapidly developing economy (mainly in big cities). There are many western businesses setting up their headquarters (and/or RD centers) there because it has a relatively highly educated workforce and is still a low cost center within the EU.

I don’t know how you’re remembering Poland but I never wanted to leave. I thought we were coming here on vacation and going back. If I was to go back to Europe, Poland would be my first choice to settle down in. UK’s gloomy weather would piss me off and I don’t really feel like learning a new language in order to move to Spain or some other mediterranean country.

I did hear however that it’s quite tough for anyone without a solid education or tangible skills to make a decent living. However that tends to be true throughout most of Europe.

Also, you state Poland resists the “global economy”. Here, read about the results of developing a large domestic market…

I think your decision to go back to Europe is a good one. If Poland is not for you, you can try other EU member states without having to worry about legal status.

Good Luck!!!

Thanks for informing me I guess. I was only nine when I left, and then I have a friend who just shits on Poland all the time, so that clouded my judgment as well. Then again I'm still not staying in Poland. First of all, my Polish is terrible. Sure, I can ask around and communicate basically, but with education, I would likely falter because my skill in the language won't be at that high of a level.

Also, Poland isn't just a 'bit homophobic.' It has politicians openly supporting anti-gay legislations and statements, even to the levels of physical violence and nationwide discrimination. Hey, that's what you get when pretty much everyone there is a roman catholic.

I can share your sentiments that I left Poland thinking I was going only on vacation, but didn't come back. I'll admit that it has a good history, and it has some nice recreational locations, but for people like me there probably won't be a very good night life. In any case, I'm happy that you think highly of your nationality. Perhaps you were better off than me, I just lived in a dinky 2 bedroom, 1 bathroom apartment with both of my parents and my older brother, but I digress there and really shouldn't judge you about it. You're probably straight and a catholic, so really Poland works out perfectly for you. UK is my best option because everyone there speaks English and it seems to be more open-minded. Yet I don't know, I'm only ranting I suppose. In any case I'm sorry if I offended you.

What's so bad about Europe? I wouldn't mind going back to Europe if I had the chance. Don't they take better care of their people there?

Javelin, you don’t need to sever relationships with friends and family in the states (legal ones at least) once you leave. As a polish citizen you are eligible for visa free travel to Canada once you get the biometric passport. You can even go to Canada and work/go to school for a year without getting anything special. It’s some sort of bi-lateral agreement they have worked out. You can read more about it here.

http://www.international.gc.ca/iyp-p...land%20ENG.pdf

In any case, since you’re from Chicagoland, your friends will not need to travel far to the Canadian border to meet up with you.

I was 10 when I was “imported” into the states. We lived quite well as a middle class family. The coolest thing was that my entire extended family was real close. Even though there were some though times everybody always helped each other out. I’m 100% catholic and 100% straight, and I think what people do with their own lives to make life worth living is their business .

Fish, Europe is not bad, but after all these years in the states it’s not a purely economic decision. You’re leaving an entire life that you know for the unknown. If going back to Europe was a purely economic decision I would have left a long time ago, but all of you know that there is more than money that makes us stay here - this is our home…

I wish you the best of luck, man. It'll be rough just trying to adjust, but you seem determined enough to do it. I hope everything goes well for you.

I thought about going back to my country of origin right out of high school, but I eventually decided to stay simply because I was 17 and the thought of leaving my immediate family behind to start over somewhere I didn't even remember was a bit hard to handle.

If something happens with immigration before you graduate, would you still leave?

I'm not 100% sure on this, but from what I've read, if you overstay your visa, if you leave before 180 days pass from your 18th birthday (that is, if you leave before you turn 18 and a half) you get a 3 year ban from the country. Any time beyond the 180 days means a 10 year ban.

correct me if I am wrong, but I thought Illinois allowed undocumented applicants to get in-state tuition provided that they graduated from a high school in illinois, and proved that they had lived in the state for over a year.
