same reason as the person above, even though I think my school would cover it if certain number of people applied, just could not risk it. (at the moment I was facing a major debt with college costs). Also, it takes three days out of my classes, which I am already far behind.

My school just became part of SHPE, so I also did not know much about what the conference entails.

Is it aimed strictly at Hispanic engineers? If so, I guess I'd have to say no.

Just wondering, what major are all of you?

No, I am not. Why would I want to attend Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers when I can attend Society of White Professional Engineers?

its not just for hispanics, its for everyone!
and its for ppl in the science, technical, engineering, and math fields.

from what i've heard its a REALLY good opportunity to meet recruiters from diff companies, get internships, and even be offered jobs....i was thinking about asking them if theyd be able to sponsor me to get my green card as soon as i graduated...but iono.

they have competitions like extrememe engineering where you work on a project for 24 hrs straight! among others, tours, workshops, dances, etc.

ohh and im a molecular bio & philosophy major...as of now.

Hey what's up guys. Haven't been on the DAP for a while now because of school and projects (taking one of my design capstones right now), but i saw this thread and thought since i had a little bit of free time and experience in this i thought i would reply.
Been in SHPE for like 3 yrs, although i'm currently not in it because i have no time, but when i was in it it was a lot of fun. Mainly people of all races and backgrounds join shpe because they have one of the biggest career fairs for scientist and engineers, so it's a great way to meet profesionals already in the game and are looking for recruits, either to hire or if you're looking to intern. Of course, this is all assuming you have those piece of crap papers. lol
No matter though, it would still be a great idea to join if your University has a chapter. Besides the neat career fairs where you meet people that work for companies like Raytheon, Boeing, IBM, Lockheed Martin, Microsoft, GM, Ford, Procter and Gambel, to name a few, they also have poster and paper competitions and this really fun competition like jeopardy where they ask you nothing but engineering related questions. Basic stuff that you should know if you're an engineering major, in subjects like fluid mechanics, heat transer, thermodynamics, dynamics, strength of materials, materials, computer science, calculus and differential equations, basic circuits, and possible now more advanced subjects like control systems and vibrations. I don't really know, since last time my team and i competed was like three yrs ago. We did not come out on top, but rumur has it that first place teams get automatic job offers, although, we did manage to take out Stanford and Berkeley (in the first round!) if i may add. lol There are major regional conferences, and once a year ALL the chapters try and meet up in one big city. By all the previous comments, i guess this year it's in Washingtion D.C..
By the way, i'm a mechanical engineering major and will probably get a second degree in computer science just for fun and to kill time because of our current situation.
Well, talk to you guys later. Take care. Oh, and shpe does have some pretty sweet parties, i remeber being invited to one by some kind folks i met from the University of Washington. Let us just say they have some VERY persuasive members. lol

C ya
