Been in SHPE for like 3 yrs, although i'm currently not in it because i have no time, but when i was in it it was a lot of fun. Mainly people of all races and backgrounds join shpe because they have one of the biggest career fairs for scientist and engineers, so it's a great way to meet profesionals already in the game and are looking for recruits, either to hire or if you're looking to intern. Of course, this is all assuming you have those piece of crap papers. lol
No matter though, it would still be a great idea to join if your University has a chapter. Besides the neat career fairs where you meet people that work for companies like Raytheon, Boeing, IBM, Lockheed Martin, Microsoft, GM, Ford, Procter and Gambel, to name a few, they also have poster and paper competitions and this really fun competition like jeopardy where they ask you nothing but engineering related questions. Basic stuff that you should know if you're an engineering major, in subjects like fluid mechanics, heat transer, thermodynamics, dynamics, strength of materials, materials, computer science, calculus and differential equations, basic circuits, and possible now more advanced subjects like control systems and vibrations. I don't really know, since last time my team and i competed was like three yrs ago. We did not come out on top, but rumur has it that first place teams get automatic job offers, although, we did manage to take out Stanford and Berkeley (in the first round!) if i may add. lol There are major regional conferences, and once a year ALL the chapters try and meet up in one big city. By all the previous comments, i guess this year it's in Washingtion D.C..
By the way, i'm a mechanical engineering major and will probably get a second degree in computer science just for fun and to kill time because of our current situation.
Well, talk to you guys later. Take care. Oh, and shpe does have some pretty sweet parties, i remeber being invited to one by some kind folks i met from the University of Washington. Let us just say they have some VERY persuasive members. lol

C ya
bye sixcocks i miss u too boo boo

Since you guys are into tech stuff, I thought I'd mention the whole Microsoft deal thing here. Windows 7 is being sold for $29 bucks to all students...

I would download it too, but at that price, shhh, I don't mind buying it. You could get it for free through your school if they are part of MSDNAA and you meet your school's requirements. Some schools require that you are majoring in engineering to get the software. Whatever the case, 29 bucks is a slick deal... Or, you can just download a copy of your favorite linux distro.

My school gives it out for free apparently only if you are a computer science major, but I still have to look more into that, if I can get it for free great.

What is crazy, is that the bookstore on my campus is selling windows 7 for $60 to students, they are ripping people off, people that think they are getting a deal on something that costs something like $140 elsewhere when they are paying twice as much as buying it directly from the source.

29, that's way too much. I can get xp for 5 bux at my school.

In all seriousness, i thought it was still in beta form? Was thinking of building a new system and installing 7, seeing how i'm not willing to pay the 20 bux for vista. Also I hear 7's not such a resource hog; what are the chances of it running on an xp systems w/say 6 year old hardware? Cuz i can run fedora or ubuntu on 6 year old hardware.

PS: I've heard of SHPE from my Eng. peers; Never really cared to find out what it was all about.

So I heard SHPE is pushing for President Obama to attend the conference!!! They want letters! That's exactly what we do best!!

"We need every single member and we mean every single member to write to President Obama asking for his participation at the SHPE Conference. Your letters will increase the chances of his attending our event. The letter should
be emailed to [email protected] and should be sent asap possible. The letters will be printed and mailed in several packages. Lets start writing."
