Some U.S. Democrats see momentum building for an overhaul of immigration laws that would legalize millions of undocumented workers, but analysts say a crowded agenda and struggling economy may once again sink hopes for reform next year

Democratic officials in Washington, however, are skeptical there will be enough time or political will to tackle the issue next year although it could be on the agenda in 2011 or 2012 depending on the outcome of congressional elections next year.

Representative Nydia Velazquez, who chairs the Congressional Hispanic Caucus and who also spoke in Wednesday's call, said she believed legislation would be passed before Congressional elections in November 2010.

A House Democratic leadership aide was less optimistic. "I think it is pretty unlikely. Our members had to take a lot of tough votes this year -- on healthcare and energy -- that they are getting beat up on."
The aide, who asked not to be identified, added: "My sense is that there isn't going to be much enthusiasm in the rank and file to take up another issue that is going to require more tough votes."

Ethan Siegal of the Washington Exchange, a private firm that tracks Congress and the White House for institutional investors, said: "I think the chance of major immigration reform next year are well under 50-50.

This is exactly what is wrong with these guys in congress sometimes. What do they mean they dont want to take up another tough issue. Isn't that what they are there for? To deal with the tough issues we face as a country. Politics at its very worst as far as I'm concerned. Take a vote and let people know where you stand already!

This is just so frustrating.

I kinda set my time of staying in the US basically until next year August.

My dad doesn't send me anymore and my family here don't want to support me. My dad is pissed at me how I keep using his money. He thinks I am lazy even though I told him many times I cannot work or do anything other than going to school.. With economical downturn, most of my private tutoring students are gone.

I only extended my stay here till August 2010 because they said about Feb,March this reform would be discussed and voted. Now if they delay more to 2011, I think this is getting ridiculous.

Because you know what? When February, March comes, they will say, "Oh by november this year" and then by the end of 2010, they will say like "oh well, we have other busy stuffs to discuss, sorry guys, we will have to delay this till 2011 or 2012."

I am not very surprised if they delay like this. They keep saying Americans get priority. They freaking got priorities whole history of the US. God damn, they at least can find work and get loans or do something while we get nothing. They can't find work because of us? Why can't they get skill by going to school?

These politicians really have fun at playing lives.

Sorry, I am just mad how the trend goes against us. I even wonder whether it is worth to live here.

I dont even get why WE would listen to such f--kery.

Analysts? WHAT f-----n analysts?? What Crowded agenda??

Reporters as such, They ALWAYS have sh-t to say when it comes to an issue they automatically want to be against, Healthcare, all they did was speculate. And look how far its come. Whenever its an issue to do with Monetary repercussions, Healthcare was the biggest issue, and now its almost over. Even if its off by ONE filthy vote tomorrow, we know its come VERRRRYY far.

Immigration doesnt even cost up to a FRACTION of what the government has lobbied for with Healthcare, and it WILL take less time. PLUS, theyre bound to MAKE more money off of it, not LOSE it, WHY would it take forever and a day to reach a decision to even bring it to the table???

Its common sense. I mean Come On.

The only reason I'm still in this country is because of this reform, so if they decide to delay it once again I will leave the country and my family for good. I was ready to leave this year, but my family urged me to stay a little longer and wait for the reform. If they delay it until 2011 or 2012 it will mean I wasted a year of my life waiting for nothing.

That would be the worst move the US would take.

What a load of laziness to say that the government has too much to worry about. I am almost 25 and been here for almost 11 years undocumented and the government rather turn their cheek on me.

I am not afraid but disappointed, but it is true that you have to be careful about what you can expect from the same people that let the country they are supposed to take care of, be brought down so low by companies using political leverage; to commit fraud and outsource the economy while ripping a huge chunk of profit.

I had hopes yes, hope in reform and the chance to work in a nation that has always been the crossrads of the world and now I can't imagine what will happen to people like me and many more who instead of getting a chance to helping this nation are getting basically kicked out, when amnesty is nothing new, it won't add to any deficit and will benefit rather than not.

If it is true that some are thinking that immigration reform can be pushed even another year or even to the 3rd or 4th quarter of 2010, they can expect great quantity of resentment from all over the world, because undocumented students are not just Latin people.

If China opens their doors to Latin America to contribute to China the USA might disappear as a backbone to global affairs quicker than you can say "We should have passed immigration reform, and quickly"...

We are already seeing many US born students take to China in search of jobs, the US not paying attention to this and not working to create more jobs using the clean energy movement that is at hand is a big risk that the US has no need to take and if done it could easily bring the USA further down the path of economic crumbling that has become usual in the US economy since the beginning of the recession.

I posted this article in another thread yesterday, and as I've written all along, the delay in healthcare reform would have been avoided if immigration reform had been pursued first as the need for more taxpayers and then healthcare reform as the final single payer system, inclusive of every taxpayer, with the issue of legal status non-existant. Then the entire circus of tea-baggers, Obama- haters, and such would not have been given a venue to derail the administration efforts for progessive reforms.

Whoever it is that convinced the president of a different order of events, should be fired immediately, just look at what it has cost him. The Gallup poll today showed that his support has dropped below 50%; much too soon for such an early presidency. But almost 75% of the people like him as a person, and as seeing how much he's aged this past few months, he and us deserve a victory. It is very, very hard to stay optimistic with the ups and downs of this.

Remember, we are still undocumented - illegally living here. They actually used this year to re-inforce the immigration enforcement - a way to urge for a reform after trying all possible ways.

They say health care votes are not going to come up this year but it's coming up this Saturday. Eff the analysts and the naysayers in the House. They don't run the effing agenda and should keep their mouths shut instead of trying to say that reform won't happen.
