Question for Korean male Dreamers

hey everyone,

I want to raise up a question for any Korean male Dreamers on this forum; specifically for those who are considering or have considered leaving the US and confronting military service in South korea.

Do any of you guys have experience or information about returning to South Korea?

Is it possible to go back to Korea, get into grad school in another country (i.e. canada, australia), and leave Korea without doing military service?

I have been hearing that the most common waiver for Korean male military service is to continue with an education, especially a PhD program. Therefore, I'm interested in applying to an australian or canadian grad school back in South korea, and leaving Korea after a year or less.

But I'm concerned that I might not be allowed to leave because of age restrictions or some other rules. I'm also concerned that I will not be allowed to further delay my military service for one year once I return.

If anyone has information, I'd be glad to hear it. Thanks!

I'm Korean, but I have no experience with this matter. However, a lot of my international student friends who are currently "legitimately" in this country have filed leave of absences to serve in the army already. They told me the only real way to avoid military service is to have a medical disability. One of my friends avoided it by having a doctor confirm his weak knee bones.
