I've been doing some research but it never seems so clear what the immediate benefits are of the Dream Act once it gets approved and I was hoping you guys might know and fill me in...

I am hoping that once it gets approved, students can, in the act's effect, apply for financial aid, apply for official ids like state ids or driver licenses...the one thing I would love to do is be able to travel outside of the US...I haven't seen my family back in my native country for over 15 years...and my dream is to study abroad one of the semesters...also....do you think we have to wait the 6 years until we can apply for a green card in order to travel abroad? and even if we do apply, it'll take some time until we recieve the green card also...so all in all we will be waiting 7+ years for a green card right? I'm just a little sad about all this waiting and hope I can do some traveling before I start a career or something...I'm so envious of my friends and fellow school mates who go backpacking across Europe or commit their time to volunteer work overseas which I would love to do as well...

Immediate effects? The effects are not over night. It would take about three months for people to apply once IF it gets passed. Then, it takes about a year, depending on the state you are in (NY for example has a long wait for processing apps), for your case to be adjudicated and get temporary residency. Within that time period you'd get a work permit.

That's how I see it, at least.

Even if the Dream Act passes, we won't be able to apply for federal financial aid.
But it will give you temporary green card so you can get your license, travel abroad and etc..
Basically most of the benefits of regular green card holder minus financial aid stuff.
But if you do need aid, you can get a loan.
And with temporary green card you can get a job.

Ah thank you thank you! I am a little disheartened by the discovery that we are not eligible for financial aid, but the fact that I get the chance to travel and see my family lifts my heart thank you for filling me in!
